Moles problems 3 Name ………………………….

Include formula and show your working for each problem … you can use a grid system to help
with calculations. Write the answer clearly at the end of each question with units and the correct
number of significant figures (usually 3 s.f.). Any missing relative atomic masses, look up on your
Periodic Table.

1 a) Calculate the molar mass of copper sulfate, CuSO 4.

(b) Calculate the percentage mass of sulfur in copper sulfate.

2 Calculate the amount (in moles) of carbon dioxide, CH 4, in 54.2 g of the gas.
M(CH4) = 16.0 g mol1

3 Calculate the mass of 4.63 mol of iron sulfide, FeS

M(FeS) = 88.0 g mol1

4 The porphryn molecule forms an important part of the haemoglobin structure. This porphryn
molecule is 78.5% carbon, 3.2% hydrogen and 18.3% nitrogen.
a. Calculate the empirical formula of porphryn.
b. If the molar mass of porphryn is 306 g mol 1, calculate the molecular formula.

5.Tartaric acid reacts with sodium hydroxide to form sodium tartrate. The equation for the
reaction is:
C4H6O6 + 2NaOH  C4H4O6Na2 + 2H2O
Calculate the mass of sodium tartrate, C 4H4O6Na2, which could be made from 15.0g of
sodium hydroxide. M(NaOH) = 40 g/mol M(C4H4O6Na2) = 194 g/mol

6. Hydrated magnesium chloride is heated in a crucible. The following data is collected.

mass of crucible and lid = 26.47 g

mass of crucible, lid and hydrated magnesium chloride = 28.62 g
mass crucible, lid and magnesium chloride after first heating = 27.49 g
mass of crucible, lid and magnesium chloride after second heating = 27.48 g

Use these results to determine the formula of hydrated magnesium chloride.

M(MgCl2) = 95.0 g mol1 M(H2O) = 18.0 g mol1
