THE TEACHER’S DIARY

(Directed by: Nithiwat Tharathorn)

Nithiwat Tharathorn’s 2014 Thai Romantic Comedy Film ‘The Teacher’s Diary’ is a
movie that shows the story of two different teachers’ affection for their students and
their experiences through heartbreaks and difficulties while teaching at the floating
school. The film managed to highlight the life of a teacher facing personal matters
and some of the undeniable problems in today’s teaching practices. This story
mirrors the hardship and dedication of every teacher nowadays for all of the students
to learn how to appreciate their huge or even mini efforts.

The movie was all about two teachers who were assigned at the same school but a
year apart. The school was floating in the middle of the lake, away from the city. Both
of them face criticisms and challenges while teaching afar from home. In spite of how
lack of knowledge and experience that Mr. Song (male lead) has and how many
obstacles will Ms. Ann (female lead) might face, their determination will be the
reason for them to keep going.

Aside from how the two teachers are really dedicated to teaching, the film is also
showing the protagonists affection towards each other or should I say it is about how
possible to love someone you've never met. Their story is not like most romances we
tend to watch these days. In this movie the male and female protagonists spend
pretty much the entire of the film apart, their interaction is through a diary. Mr. Song
found the former teacher’s diary ‘Ms. Ann’. He reads it and realizes that he and the
owner of the diary have gone through the same situation. He found himself relating
to Ms. Ann’s thoughts and feelings. Until he finished reading it and decided to meet
the owner of the diary but for some reason he couldn’t meet her. Until he decided to
write down his journey in teaching. A year passed by, Ms. Ann decided to go back to
the floating school, then when they started to renovate the school she found her
diary. Ms. Ann was too stunned to speak, knowing her diary is still existing. She read
Mr. Song notes and ending up having interest in him. In this film, you will notice how
determined they are just to see each other in person. At the end of the movie, luckily
they ended up meeting each other.

Though “The Teacher’s Diary” is a very heartwarming, good, and meaningful movie,
at the same time I badly want a sequel to answer all my questions right after the film
ended. The plot was well written, it is not the typical rom-com drama I’ve watched.
The story is so relatable which can make you realize the value of all teachers in
today’s teaching. As you watch and understand the movie, you can easily recognize
how dedicated they are in teaching despite every problem they might face. As a
whole, the film was directed nicely and the characters’ role was executed
successfully, the story is an example of appreciating every educator's affection and
efforts toward its students.
