Title of Experiment: Experiment 2 : Determination of

The Valency of Magnesium

Date: 8/2/2022

Practical Group: P3

Name of Lecturer: Dr Ooi Zhong Xian

Objectives: 1.) To study the quantitative relationship between the amount of reactants and

products of a reaction.

2.) To determine the reaction stoichiometry and the valency of magnesium.

Calculations:

Given the equation:

𝑥
Mg + X HCl → MgClx + 2H2

Total volume of hydrogen gas

= volume of unmarked space of a burette + volume of marked burette

= [20mL ̶ (50mL ̶ 37.3mL)] + (50mL ̶ 44.8mL)

= 12.5mL

No. of moles of Magnesium

= weight of magnesium used ÷ molar mass of Magnesium

= 0.0155g ÷ 24.31

= 6.38 ×10-4 mol

No. of moles of Hydrogen gas:

Using Ideal Gas Equation:

pV = nRT

(101325)(12.5×10-6) = n(8.31)(25+273)

n = 5.11×10-4 mol
Ratio of number of moles of magnesium and hydrogen gas

= n(Mg) : n(H2)

= 6.38 x 10-4 mol : 5.11×10-4 mol

=1:1

Thus,
𝑥
=1
2

ꭓ=2

Substituting X = 2 into reaction equation:

Mg (s) + 2HCl (aq) → MgCl2 (aq) + H2 (g)

Conclusion:

The value of X = 2 and the reaction equation can be written as follows:

Mg (s) + 2HCl (aq) → MgCl2 (aq) + H2 (g)

The volume of hydrogen gas produced is 12.5cm³ through the reaction of hydrochloric acid

with 0.155g of magnesium ribbon. Magnesium chloride and hydrogen gas are produced in the

reaction and no ions are left in the solution as all the ions reacted to form respective compounds

or gas.
