Animal products

Chủ đề
In the modern world, it is no longer necessary to use animals as food or other products,
such as medicines and clothing. Do you agree or disagree?

Bài mẫu
The argument over the use of animals to provide food, medicine, and clothing has been
ongoing for years. Some people consider the killing of animals to produce food and
other products to be unnecessary. In my view, I agree with this idea and will discuss
several compelling reasons in this essay.

These days, we are faced with many public health challenges regarding poor health
conditions, including cancer and heart disease, caused by excessive consumption of
meat on a regular and long-term basis. Experts are calling for a change in human diets
so that people can enjoy better health. Fortunately, many alternative meat products are
available on the market. In fact, vegetarian diets are being favored by a growing number
of people and can provide the same amount of nutrients for consumers. In particular,
mushrooms and tofu contain high levels of protein, a kind of nutrient presumably only
found in meat, and can therefore be used as a substitute.

Furthermore, medical experiments on animals and medicines manufactured from

animals’ body parts received little endorsement in the past. Nowadays, herbs and many

6 ZIM
other types of plant-based medicines, such as ginseng, can cure many diseases, prolong
human life expectancy, and aid medical practitioners in the treatment of many illnesses.
More seriously, thousands of wild animals, such as tigers and minks, are killed each
year, with their fur taken to produce coats and accessories for the fashion industry.
There are now similar products made from plants and artificial materials that can fulfill
our needs. Animals do not have to suffer for our needs anymore.

In conclusion, I think that our needs and desires do not justify the suffering of animals
and animal products are no longer necessary. We can choose a different source of
nourishment, medicine and clothing without any toll on wild animals.

Work/Study

Are you a student or do you work?

I’m a student at Foregin Trade University, which is located on Chua Lang street. My
school is about 5 kilometers away from where I live.

Do you enjoy what you study?

Not really. I don’t think what I am learning is practical and there is always a lot of
homework and deadline. But my friends at school are really nice. They are the main the
reason for me to go to class.

Street market

Are street markets common in Vietnam?

Yes. Street markets and supermarkets coexist in Vietnam because people prefer to have
more than one option for grocery shopping. Street markets offer a variety of products
from food to clothing. Most of the goods here are dirt-cheap.

What is usually sold there?

As I mentioned before, mostly groceries. However, There is another kind of street
market, the night market, which is a must-visit place for tourist. These open-air markets
are a heaven for shopaholics with lots of accessory shops.

Describe a time someone gave you money as a gift.
• When you received money
• Who the person was
• Why he/she gave you money
And how did you feel about the gift.

Let me tell you about the time my parents gave me some money as a present.

So you know during Tet holiday, adults often give children red envelopes with paper
money inside. Traditionally, these notes are a bless for a new year of good health, luck
and happiness. However, this custom has become something ugly as many children do
not understand such gestures and think of these gifts as nothing more than some extra
pocket money. I was no exception.

For years, my parents have always been the most generous people when it comes to the
amount of money I received in these red envelopes. Sometimes they gave me a million
VND, which was like a fortune to a kid at the time. However, about five to six years ago,
when I received a two dollar note, which was about 40 thousand VND, from my parent’s
envelope, I was super disappointed. No further explanations were given for the lost of
the lion share of my “income” during Tet that year.

Once I have to start giving out money, I begin to understand what my parents was
trying to teach me. Kids need to realize that lucky money are only meant for good
luck. I hated to see that the first thing many kids do after receiving my envelopes is to
immediately check how much they “earn”. My future kids, therefore, should not expect
a thick envelope from me during Tet.

Từ vựng
1. Pocket money: tiền tiêu vặt
2. The lion share of something: phần lớn nhất và tuyệt vời nhất của một thứ

Do you think money management skills are important?
Absolutely. Knowing how to manage money properly is an essential life skill, you know.
It helps us avoid getting into financial issues in the future. For example, many people
cannot stop themselves from purchasing unnecessary items, you know. A person who
have great money management skills, on the other hand, will save up some money in
case of emergencies.

Do you think cash will be replaced by credit cards in the future?

I believe payment by cash will be a thing of the past. Most developed nations has
managed to establish cashless societies where credit cards or mobile payment are more
commonly used than cash. Cashless payment needs a boost in Vietnam since most
Vietnamese people are still used to carrying a lot of money at all times.

Children development

Chủ đề
The best way to ensure the growth of children is to make parents take parenting courses.
Do you agree or disagree?

Bài mẫu
Some people believe that parents should be made to undertake parenting courses in
order to guarantee that their children develop well. Personally, I disagree with this idea
and will outline the reasons below.

On the one hand, parenting courses could equip parents with necessary skills and
knowledge to help them deal with raising their children. For example, many first-time
parents can be overwhelmed by the responsibility of caring for their new born infant.
Without proper instruction, they do not know how to handle or care for their baby most
effectively. Parenting courses could help parents to overcome these common problems.
Similarly, many parents have a great deal of trouble dealing with troublesome teenagers
who are misbehaving while going through adolescence.(1) Parenting courses could also
help parents to better understand and deal with these issues.

However, while parenting courses could provide a lot of good skills and information to
parents, many people would argue that parenting is an innate skill that every mother
and father can naturally access once they have a child.(2) For example, many mothers

ZIM 13
instinctively know how to hold and care for their child as soon as it is born. In addition,
many people have their own ideas about what good parenting involves due to their own
upbringing, and cultural influences. Lastly, many people would consider it ridiculous
that people should be forced to attend parenting courses as people should be free to
make their own decisions.(3)

In conclusion, although parenting courses could provide some beneficial outcomes for
both parents and children, I believe that it should be up to the parents to decide whether
or not they wish to participate in such courses.

The table shows the amount of money that four car manufacturing companies spent on
different forms of advertising in the UK in 2002.

It is clear that Renault spent the largest amount of money on advertising during 2002. In
addition, TV advertisements were by far the most popular advertising format while the
opposite was true for cinema advertising.

In 2002, Cetirizine allocated $70 million for TV advertisements while the figure for
Vauxhall was slightly lower, at $65 million. Meanwhile, $59 million was spent on TV
commercials by Renault, and only $45 million by Rover. In terms of press advertising, the
amount of money spent by Renault was again largest, at $45 million, slightly higher than
that of Rover, at $38 million. In contrast, Vauxhall and Cetirizine only spent $8 million
and $12 million on press advertising, respectively.

Of the other forms, advertising in cinemas and outdoors incurred the lowest costs, with

Accommodation
Are you living in a house or a flat?
Currently I’m living in a rented flat on Phao Dai Lang Street. It’s not so far from my
workplace, only about 2 kilometers.

How long have you been living there?

Less than a year. Before I moved to this flat, I had been living with my parents but it’s too
far from my workplace and the traffic there was always terrible. It took me a long while
to find this place but I’m pretty happy with it now.

What do you want to change about your neighborhood?

Hmm… That’s an interesting question. Actually I’ve never thought of this before. My
neighborhood is pretty good I think. It’s quite civilized, and the location is convenient
for me to travel to work. I don’t think I want to change any of these.

Holiday
Are there a lot of holidays in Vietnam?
Let me see…quite a lot. I mean, there’re holidays almost every month, and sometimes
these holidays are to celebrate the most ridiculous things. But I’m fine with that, you
know, I have more days off from work!

What do Vietnamese people like to do during holidays?

I think most Vietnamese people want to stay at home and relax to recover after hard
days at work and school. I also notice that families in the city often go on a picnic during
these days.

Describe an important historical event
• What event it is
• When it happened
• Who or what was involved in it
And explain why you think it is an important historical event.

I would like to tell you about one of the most important past events to me. That is the
time when President Ho Chi Minh read the Declaration of Independence, establishing
the Socialist Republic of Vietnam.

History lessons at school in Vietnam might be boring, and not so many students pay
attention to their teachers’ words in history classes, but I’m sure there’s one thing about
history that all students in Vietnam remember. That is the date of the day marking our
freedom. September 2nd 1945 was a glorious day. Thousands of people gathered at the
Ba Dinh Square to listen to the Declaration of Independence.

You know, in the past, our country was invaded and colonized for a very long time by
different nations, but we never forgot our traditions and customs, and always tried to
fight the enemies to reclaim our independence. France colonized us for almost 100
years, feasted on our people’s blood and sweat. Most Vietnamese people back then
were farmers. They were uneducated and had to bow to their inhumane land lords.
Despite the great disadvantages, they were still able to unite and keep fighting bravely.
Millions of them died, but their heroic actions live forever. And as you can guess, we
finally took back our freedom.

From that day up until now, every Vietnamese person has the right to proudly say that he
or she is free. I mean, I’m truly grateful to all the soldiers who overcame great hardships
and fought with their lives so that I can enjoy a better life now.

Từ vựng
1. Glorious: huy hoàng
2. Reclaim independence: giành lại độc lập
3. Inhumane: vô nhân đạo, dã man

18 ZIM
Part 3
How is history taught in Vietnam?

It’s just terrible. I mean, most students are given a history book full of text and unnecessary
details of some wars, written in a way that attract little interest. During all my years at
school, my history teachers’ job was to read the whole text out loud and make sure that
their students write everything down in their notebook. It’s really boring and tiresome!

Is there any difference between teaching history through books and movies?

I feel lucky you mentioned that. I’ve always dreamed of one day when history in my
country are taught via movies and video documentaries. That way students might feel
more excited and finally be able to pay attention to the knowledge they are learning in
class. By presenting history in the form of images and videos, I believe history classes
can achieve their original purpose – to teach history instead of lulling students to sleep.

Why are there many children who do not like to learn history?

There are two reasons in my opinion. The first reason is that most of them are not mature
enough to feel interested in battles and wars that happened in the past. I mean, they are
too young and are more keen on animated movies and video games. The second reason
is the way that history is taught in most countries nowadays. I hold a strong belief that
if schools change the way they teach history, things will be a lot different.

Road safety

Chủ đề
Some people think that the best way to improve road safety is to increase the minimum
legal age for driving a car or motorbike.
To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Bài mẫu
Some people believe that raising the minimum driving age is the best solution to enhance
road safety. I disagree with this idea because I believe that other methods are equally
important and should be taken into account as well.

On the one hand, I agree that increasing the minimum age for getting a driving licence
can be an effective road safety measure. Firstly, since people are often more mature
and have more life experience when they get older, they can make quicker and wiser
decisions to avoid dangerous situations on the road compared to younger drivers.(1)
My father, for example, will never use his phone when driving as he knows that he could
easily lose his concentration and cause an accident. Secondly, raising the minimum
driving age can allow adolescents to have more time to sharpen their driving skills.
They can attend defensive driving courses to learn how to deal with different driving
scenarios, which will help them minimize the risk of accidents when driving in the
future.(2)

On the other hand, I think that better road safety can be achieved by other more effective

20 ZIM
methods without increasing the driving age. To begin with, more stringent traffic
regulations should be imposed, which would act as a deterrent to would-be traffic law
breakers. In Singapore, people who run red lights are fined heavily, and therefore this
will make them more responsible in order to avoid future punishments. In addition,
governments should allocate financial resources to improving public transport, which
would encourage citizens to drive their private cars or motorbikes less. As a result,
these residents will no longer worry about the risks that they may face when driving
their own vehicles, such as drunk driving or falling asleep at the wheel.(3)

In conclusion, while raising the legal driving age can make our roads safer to some
extent, I believe that governments should also introduce other road safety measures
that are discussed above.

Well, I come from Hanoi, the capital of my country Vietnam. It’s a small yet very beautiful

What do you like about your city?

There’re many awesome things about my city. Well, people in my town are really friendly
and helpful. They’re always willing to give you a hand when you need help. Also, Hanoi’s
cuisine is very diverse with a lot of delicious dishes such as Pho and Spring rolls.

Do you want to live here in the near future?

Have you ever lost your patience?

I sometimes lose my patience when I’m stuck in the traffic for hours after a hard day’s
work or I’m constantly interrupted by my family members while working in my room.

When do you need patience the most?

Occasionally, not being able to keep your patience can cause undesirable results, for
example, for studying English, you need to build up your knowledge day by day, sometimes
you have to take some rest. So, I think I need to be patient when I learn a new language.

Describe a good law in your country
• What the law is
• How you first learned about the law
• Who the law affects
And explain why it is a good law. (what would happen without it?)

Today I’m going to talk about a law that I find very effective in my country. It is about
banning people from throwing garbage in public places.

A few days ago, I heard the news broadcast on VTV1 Channel that this law had been
enacted after the Environmental Protection Conference last month. It says that no
one is allowed to litter in public sites, especially tourist attractions. If anyone is caught
throwing rubbish in such places, he or she must pay a fine of about 1 million to 5 million
VND, which is a huge amount of money. In case a person is reported to have broken
the law, the one who reported may receive a bonus of 5 million, of course, with proper
evidence only.

After this law came into force and some people were reported. The strict punishment
and strong criticism from the media as well have discouraged citizens from throwing
rubbish everywhere they went. Also, the stunning views and natural landscapes of
some famous tourist attractions in Vietnam have been protected. There are also fewer
complaints from tourists about so much litter such as used cans and bottles appearing
on the beach. And the most important thing is citizens’ awareness of protecting the
environment has greatly improved.

That’s all I want to share!

Từ vựng

ZIM 25
Part 3
What are the necessary qualities for someone to become a judge?
I think there are many essential characteristics of a good judge. First, a judge should be
fair. Because he is the representative of justice, I suppose fairness is the first quality that
matters. Besides, he needs to be wise to apply the laws properly and suitably according
to different cases. Sometimes, it’s important that the judge understands the real story
behind what is told.

What are the necessary qualities for someone to become a lawyer?

In my opinion, a lawyer needs to be honest and have a deep understanding of the laws.
To be more specific, a lawyer should always provide the exact information on their
clients’ situation, then give them the best advice on what they should do. A lawyer also
needs to understand the law thoroughly so that he can protect his clients’ rights or
reduce the severity of their sentences.

Are there any circumstances that the law should be broken?

I think in some cases, the law can be broken. For example, in my country, it is against the
law to run a red light, but ambulances are allowed to do so. So I think that it is necessary
to violate the traffic laws if a person is carrying a patient whose life is being threatened.

News media

Chủ đề
Some people think that newspapers are the best way to get news. However, others
believe that they can get news better through another media platform.
Discuss both views and give your opinion.

Bài mẫu
Opinions diverge widely on the importance of different news sources. While some
people consider reading newspapers to be the most effective way to receive news, I
would argue that it is no longer the best way to get the news thanks to the proliferation
of online news sources.

On the one hand, there are good grounds for arguing that newspapers still hold the
most popular position among newsreaders even though we are living in a digital world.
Firstly, since newspapers have existed long before the introduction of the internet,
most senior citizens have developed a habit of reading a newspaper every day, and
they do not want to change this habit.(1) Secondly, newspapers are considered a more
reliable source of information compared to other sources nowadays. This is because
newspapers are usually written by professional journalists, and are thoroughly checked,
edited and censored prior to their publication.

On the other hand, the Internet has become an increasingly dominant news source
these days due to the benefits it offers.(2) The first thing that attracts people to reading

ZIM 27
news online is its easy access. With the widespread presence of the Internet, people
with portable devices, such as a smartphone, can access a huge storage of news in
just a few clicks. Furthermore, online news channels have brought a greater reading
experience to readers, thanks to the constant advancement in technology, which has
made it possible to upload videos and audio recordings online. For instance, soccer
fans these days can re-watch their favourite matches whenever they want with only a
laptop connected to the Internet, which a mere newspaper cannot do.(3)

In conclusion, although I do agree that printed newspapers are very popular amongst
certain groups of people, I disagree that it is the best way to receive the news as more
and more people are drawn to using the Internet.

What do you do in the morning?

So normally I like to wake up around 7am, have a light breakfast, and do some household
chores, like wash the dishes or sweep the floor, or something like that. Then I usually do
some exercise for an hour or two and have a second breakfast at about 9.30. After that,
I have some spare time to do other things, like my hobbies, or some other things that I
need to get done.

Have your ever changed your routine?

Of course. I mean, my routine depends on my work. These days I work as an English
teacher which requires me to work in the afternoon and evening, so I have plenty of free

ZIM 31
time in the morning. But in the past I used to have a nine-to-five job, so my routine was
completely different then.

Do you often have breakfast?

Yeah, every day. My brain can’t function properly without a good breakfast. In fact, as
I mentioned before, I usually have two breakfasts, a light breakfast when I wake up,
and then a bigger breakfast around 9 or 10am. I don’t know how people live without
breakfasts.

Từ vựng
1. Feminine: nữ tính
2. A light breakfast: bữa sáng nhẹ
3. Household chores (wash the dishes, sweep the floor): việc nhà
4. Nine-to-five job: công việc truyền thống (làm từ sáng đến chiều)

Part 2
Describe an interesting old person
• Who the person was
• How you met that person
• Where you met him or her
And explain why you find them interesting.

The old person that I find interesting that I would like to tell you about is my grandma.
Actually, she died a few years ago but she was a very inspiring person. My earliest
memories of her are probably from when I was about 5 or 6 years old, because before
that I didn’t live with my grandparents so I didn’t see them very often.

There are many reasons why I think she was very interesting. Firstly, she grew up in
Australia during a time when men and women did not have equal rights, especially in
terms of salary, and she used to work in a leather factory and she knew that she was
good at her job, better than a lot of the men in the factory. So one day, she demanded
that her boss pay her the same wage as her male colleagues because she was better
than a lot of them. This was a brave thing to do and her boss gave her a raise. I think this
is a good example of her personality actually. She was an honest and fair person, she
worked hard and she expected to be paid fairly.

She always really loved to live in old houses in the countryside and filled them with all
sorts of antiques and lots of interesting gadgets, so it was quite fascinating for me and
my brothers to visit her house when we were young. Secondly, my grandmother was a
real individual. She loved to play video games even when she was 60 years old, and she
used to ride a big motorcycle and she had some tattoos on her arms, which was very
uncommon for a woman her age. But my brothers and I thought she was really cool. She
was also a very talented artist as well. She painted many beautiful paintings, and learnt
to play the piano when she was about 65. And because of these things, my grandmother
is someone I really admired.

Từ vựng
1. Earliest memories: những kỉ niệm đầu tiên
2. Equal rights: quyền bình đẳng
3. To be a real individual: độc đáo không giống ai

Part 3
Can old and young people share the same interests?
Yes of course. There are many interests that young and old people share. For example,
many young and old people like to play the same sports, such as badminton, or the same
games, like chess. It really just depends on each person’s personalities.

What can old people teach the youth?

Well, I suppose there are plenty of things the older generations can teach the youth. For
example, older people usually have a lot of life experience and have learnt a lot of important
life lessons which they can teach younger people about. In Vietnam, most older people
experienced a lot of hardships in their lives when they were young, because the country was
involved in a lot of wars, and many people didn’t have jobs or money or even food, so they
had to learn to survive and overcome those difficult times. Most kids these days don’t have
to deal with anything like that, so there are many things they could learn from their elders.

What can young people teach the old?

Well, I guess the first thing that springs to mind is about how to use technology. Many
older people tend to be living behind the times so they tend to have a hard time learning
how to use modern computers and other devices, like smartphones and so on, so that’s one
thing they can learn from the youth. Also, I guess many older people still hold on to some
traditional beliefs and customs, some of which are a bit out-dated, while the youth are
usually in the know when it comes to modern ways of living and more modern views and
opinions about certain aspects of life. So I guess both generations have something to learn
from each other.

Từ vựng
1. Life experience: trải nghiệm sống
2. Important life lessons: bài học cuộc sống quan trọng
3. Springs to mind: nảy ra trong đầu
4. Behind the times: lạc hậu
5. Have a hard time: gặp khó khăn
6. Traditional beliefs and customs: niềm tin và phong tục truyền thống
7. Out-dated: lạc hậu, lỗi thời
8. In the know: hiểu biết về điều gì đó
