2.1 About the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development

(CIPD)
The Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD) is the world’s leading
professional body for experts in people at work. For more than 100 years, we've been
championing better work and working lives by setting professional standards for HR and
people development, as well as driving positive change in the world of work.
With hubs in the UK, Ireland, Middle East and Asia, we're the career partner of choice for
more than 150,000 members around the world. The CIPD is the only body in the world that
can award Chartered status to individual HR and L&D professionals, and our independent
research and insights make us trusted advisers to governments and employers.
The CIPD can help with supporting you to keep up-to-date with the latest thinking and best
practice, as well as providing you with the products and tools to help you have the maximum
impact in your job, including:

• Professional membership.
• Access to the ‘Profession Map’ supporting your professional development.
• Opportunities to increase your knowledge through qualifications and training.
• Gaining insights from peers through networking and world-class events.
• Accessing a wealth of resources, insights, commentaries and analysis.

The CIPD’s role encompasses supporting, promoting and influencing change for the
sustainable development of HR capability within organisations. Its work supporting the
profession encompasses:

• Emphasis on creating shared-value for the business, employees and the customer and
also clearer understanding of people risk.

2.2 Membership of the CIPD

When you commence one of the Bradfield Group programmes you will need to become a
student member of the CIPD. The CIPD will email you shortly after Block 1 of your programme
to explain how to register for membership. It is your own responsibility to register with CIPD
online on the CIPD Website and to pay the fee.

Your Certificate will be issued by the CIPD, not by Bradfield Group, which is your CIPD Centre.
It is therefore important that you are a member of the CIPD throughout your course up until
the time you receive your CIPD Qualification certificate. Students who are not full members
of the CIPD will not receive their certificates at the end of their studies.

Please be aware that the Bradfield Group does not process CIPD application forms or deal
with payments or technical issues relating to CIPD registration. Please visit the following link
for details about registration: www.cipd.co.uk/studentregistration

2.2.1 Associate Membership of the CIPD

Upon successful completion of your Diploma in People Management you will qualify to

3.0 THE CIPD ASSOCIATE LEVEL PROGRAMME

The CIPD’s Associate level programme (also referred to as Level 5) is aimed primarily at
Human Resource professionals who are looking to progress in the people profession. This
programme is called the Associate Diploma in Organisational Learning and Development.
At Level 5 a learner:
▪ can analyse, interpret and evaluate relevant information, concepts and ideas
▪ is aware of the nature and scope of the area of study or work
▪ understands different perspectives, approaches or schools of thought and the
reasoning behind them
▪ can determine, adapt and use appropriate methods, cognitive and practical skills to
address broadly defined, complex problems
▪ can use relevant research or development to inform actions
▪ can evaluate actions, methods and results.

Background:
The CIPD Level 5 Associate Diploma in Organisational Learning and Development is a
professional qualification based on the CIPD Profession Map. The Map was launched in 2018
having been developed in collaboration with a wide range of experts working at the heart of
the profession. It sets the international benchmark for the people profession and provides a
strong foundation to give people professionals the confidence and capabilities to guide their
decision-making, actions and behaviours.

Each unit within the CIPD Level 5 Associate Diploma in Organisational Learning and
Development has clear linkage to the Profession Map. The core units are directly aligned to
the core knowledge and core behaviours of the Profession Map, as shown in Appendix 1
This qualification builds on the CIPD Level 3 Foundation Certificate in People Practice and is
aimed at further expanding learners’ independent practice to enable them to evolve into
more senior roles within organisations as people professionals.

Learners’ work will be mainly operational with some complexity. They will contribute to the
thinking around their work, analysing information to inform choices and actions. Working
with and influencing others through their work will create short-term value for a wider
audience.

Using a framework of HR and L&D understanding, behaviours and skills development, this
qualification offers opportunity for learners to transition to employment as people managers
or learning and development specialists.

8 of 37
L5 Student Handbook Gulf Version 1 – L5DOL / March 2021

▪ are working in a learning and development role and wish to contribute their knowledge
and skills to create learning environments.

through impactful learning.

provided by the CIPD.
Centres will be required to mark the assignments and internally moderate the marks. The
CIPD will conduct moderation sampling and validate centre marking before the release of
results to learners.
Assessment for the CIPD Level 5 Associate Diploma in Organisational Learning and

4.4 Progression Routes

We see the achievement of the Associate Diploma in People Management as real

recognition for people professionals in consolidating knowledge and applying best practice
across a broad range of Human Resource areas. We also believe that for many people this is
a milestone in their journey to become fully-fledged HR professionals championing better
work and working lives. The next milestone could be the Level 7 Advanced Diploma in
Strategic People Management or the Level 7 Advanced Diploma in Strategic Learning and
Development.

The Advanced Diploma in Strategic People Management further extends the disciplines and
scope learned in the CIPD Level 5 Associate Diploma in Organisational Learning and
Development and is aimed at intensifying learners’ autonomy and judgement so that they
can strategically lead and direct organisations and their people. It offers the opportunity for
learners to influence people practitioners and organisations. This qualification galvanises
learners with a depth and breadth of understanding of people practice and management to
furnish them with the insight and strategy development skills required to operate and lead
in an organisational setting at this level. The Advanced Diploma in Strategic Learning and
Development offers similar scope and opportunity but with a specialist focus on
organisational design and development, leadership and management development and
designing learning to improve organisational performance.
Both Advanced Qualifications are suited to individuals who:
▪ are experienced people practitioners
▪ are working in a senior people practice role and wish to extend and deepen their skills
and understanding to shape strategy, policy and people
▪ wish to shape people practice, creating value for a wider audience.
▪ wish to lead and manage people and practice within organisations

5.0 STUDENT SUPPORT

5.1 Equal Opportunities Statement of Commitment

Bradfield group is committed to providing equal opportunities to all its students regardless of:
1. Race 6. Religion or Belief
2. Sex 7. Gender Reassignment
3. Sexual Orientation 8. Age
4. Pregnancy and Maternity 9. Marital Status / Civil Partnership
5. Disability

We pride ourselves on the level of support that we provide to our students on an individual basis.
This level of support is provided in accordance with this statement.

5.2 Students with Disabilities

Students who have a disability that may disadvantage them when undertaking assignments, e.g.
dyslexia, visual impairment, will be advised to inform their Personal Tutor (see 5.4). The Personal
Tutor will, on receipt of an appropriate verification of a disability, make every effort to make
provision to ensure that the student is able to complete their assessments and that any
reasonable adjustments are considered during assessment of work.

5.3 Students for whom English is not Their First Language (ESOL)

With our substantive experience of running CIPD Programmes in the Middle East we are able to
provide guidance and support in English for Speakers of other languages. In our recruitment
process we assess our students for their proficiency in spoken and written English and we
encourage development activities for those students who would benefit from practising their
spoken English. Our learning materials are clear and concise – with minimum use of jargon. In
the classroom our tutors encourage groupwork and student presentation thus giving our
students maximum opportunity to practise their language skills in a safe and supportive
environment.
For written work, allowances for grammatical error will be accepted, but it is expected that spell
checking will be applied by students. Demonstration of theoretical understanding and skills
displayed by the students must however meet with CIPD criteria. We would strongly encourage

14 of 37
L5 Student Handbook Gulf Version 1 – L5DOL / March 2021
students who fall into this category to re-read their work and check it before submission and to
take advantage of submitting a draft to their tutors for comment and advice.

5.4 Personal Tutor & Tutors

Each programme is run by one or more tutors. Students will be allocated one of these tutors to
support them whilst working on their assessments and a Personal Tutor will also be responsible
for their welfare and progress. The Personal Tutor will be allocated when students begin the
programme. It would be of benefit to them if they are able to engage the additional support of
a mentor from within their chosen organisation or from within the CIPD branch, if available.

Tutor support is available in scheduled taught workshop sessions, also informally one-to-one
during refreshment and lunch breaks. Tutors are able to offer advice on content and structure
on elements of each written assignment.

5.5 Drafts
Tutors will be able to comment on elements of each written assignment. Comments may be
made through online discussions, classroom discussions or by email.

Students can use this opportunity on one of the following occasions:

- Before their first submission, OR
- If they are referred at, or miss a 1st submission, then before their second submission.

Drafts need to be sent to the tutor no later than ten days before the assignment is due.
Alternatively, students can have one 15 minute virtual call with their tutor.

All draft submissions for comment should be in Microsoft Word unless PowerPoints are part of
the submission; please see Section 7.13 Submission Procedure, which explains how to submit
your work.

Tutors are only able to comment on key points of structure and content.

15 of 37
L5 Student Handbook Gulf Version 1 – L5DOL / March 2021
5.6 Library Facilities
We have an electronic library of CIPD learning materials available on our website. The books are
divided into individual chapters in .pdf format. Students may borrow chapters of any of these
books for specified periods of time. Programme tutors will help you to identify which chapters
will be most useful for you.
Recommendations for further reading will be provided to students throughout the programme.

5.7 Further Sources of Support Material

Students are recommended to refer to the CIPD website at: http://www.cipd.co.uk.

6.0 QUALITY ASSURANCE
The Bradfield Group delivers its courses to the highest professional standards and with this in
mind the quality of all aspects of the course is strictly monitored. For details about Unit feedback
see 7.19.

6.1 Student Representation and Course Meetings

Each cohort of students is invited to elect a representative who will be expected to represent the
views of fellow students in all matters to do with the running of the course.

6.2 Programme Meetings

There are two formal bi-annual review meetings of programmes, which all Tutors are expected
to attend, as this provides them with valuable feedback and also provides them with input for
the following year. Student representatives from each programme are asked to provide feedback
and input to these meetings.

6.3 Internal Quality Assurance

In order to ensure consistency in training delivery and assessing learning between various groups
Bradfield undertakes an internal quality assurance process. A minimum of 20% of work is
internally assured by an independent assessor.

Grades are not released until the Internal Quality Assurance and CIPD Moderation Processes are
complete (see 6.4).

6.4 External Quality Assurance

The CIPD appoints External Quality Assurers who review a cross-section of work during and at the
end of the programmes; they will also visit the Centre. This is to ensure quality and consistency
of the marking and feedback given to students. The External Quality Assurer may recommend
the amendment of marks if he or she feels that this is appropriate.

The External Quality Assurer is involved in Regional and National Standardisation exercises to
ensure the parity of interpretation and application of the assessment criteria across all centres.

17 of 37
L5 Student Handbook Gulf Version 1 – L5DOL / March 2021
6.5 Overall Quality Assurance
It is only when both Internal and External Quality Assurance processes have been completed that
the CIPD will issue Certificates.

6.6 Certification

The Certification process will normally take 4-5 months from the date that the tutor marks the
final piece of work.

18 of 37
L5 Student Handbook Gulf Version 1 – L5DOL / March 2021
7.0 PROGRAMME MANAGEMENT

7.1 Attendance
Students are expected to be punctual for the sessions. If you are unable to attend a session
please advise the Learning & Development Co-ordinator (open courses) or Programme Co-
ordinator (in-house courses) and if possible your Tutor.

❖ An attendance rate of at least 80% of the overall course is required to pass.

You will not be able to miss an entire unit’s tuition. It is mandatory that students attend the
Assessment events. Failure to do so will jeopardise your successful completion of the course.

If you cannot attend an Assessment event for any reason, you must contact the Learning &
Development Co-ordinator or Programme Co-ordinator in London as soon as possible giving the
reason for your absence.

7.2 Messages/Mobile Phones

We understand that there will be occasions when students may need to be contacted. These
interruptions should be restricted to the refreshment breaks.
All mobile phones should be switched to silent during the training sessions.

7.3 Academic Appeals – Grades for Assessments

7.3.1 Stage One

In the event of there being a dispute regarding any of the grades, students have the right of
appeal. In the first instance, this should be to your Tutor, who will ask for a review of the grades.
Your Tutor will provide a response to you within 10 working days of the appeal.

7.3.2 Stage Two

In the event that the student remains dissatisfied, the Director of Learning and Development or
a representative nominated by him will be asked to consider the case and will provide a written
response within 20 working days. His/her decision will be final.

19 of 37
L5 Student Handbook Gulf Version 1 – L5DOL / March 2021
7.4 Non-Academic Issues

7.4.1 Concerns or Complaints Stage 1

Initially these shall be raised informally with your Tutor who will discuss the matter and try to
resolve it in the first instance.

7.4.2 Concerns or Complaints Stage 2

Should you not be satisfied with the response, contact training support via email:
trainingsupport@bradfield.co.uk and we will do our best to help you. If the matter is urgent,
please call.

7.4.3 Concerns or Complaints Stage 3

If you are still not satisfied with the response, a copy of our formal complaints procedure is
available upon request.

7.5 Referral to CIPD

After exhaustion of our formal complaints procedure and the issue remains disputed, the matter
can be referred to the CIPD.

7.6 Deferrals
A deferral is when a student requests to complete their studies with a different group from the
one they started with or wishes to undertake a block of their studies at a different time to the
original programme dates. There is an additional charge for this.

This may occur because the student is unable to attend a scheduled block [7.6.8] or is referred
on the second submission of a piece of assessed work and needs to re-take it in order to
successfully complete the course [7.6.9].

Deferral requests must be made in writing and it remains at the discretion of the Director of
Learning and Development or the Managing Director as to whether a deferral can be made.

A deferral can take place if the following principles are met:

20 of 37
L5 Student Handbook Gulf Version 1 – L5DOL / March 2021
7.6.1 A student must provide a valid reason for a deferral, which needs to be authorised by the
Bradfield Group. This will be done in consultation with the student’s tutor and the Director of
Learning and Development for the programme on which the student is studying. Only the
Director of Learning and Development and the Managing Director have the authority to
authorise a deferral.

7.6.2 In order to defer, all assessments must be successfully completed up-to-date otherwise
the course will need to be restarted. Requests must be made no later than seven days in advance
of the start of the Block of training that a student wishes to defer. The definition of being ‘up-
to-date’ is when the assignments are submitted and marked according to the schedule of
deadlines. The assignments must have been passed.

7.6.3 If a student has already been granted an extension but has not yet submitted their
assignment or it has yet to be marked, then a deferral may be granted. The deferral request
must still, however, be made seven days prior to the start of the block the student wishes to
defer.

7.6.4 The deferral must take place so that the student is able to complete the course within a
two year period.

7.6.5 A student can only defer on two occasions and provided that Points 7.6.1. and 7.6.2.
mentioned above are met. Second deferrals will involve further consultation with the Bradfield
Group.

7.6.6 A student will take on new assessment submission dates consistent with the group they
defer to and submit assessments as required.

7.6.7 A fee will be levied for all deferrals to cover administrative and tutoring costs.

7.6.8 Deferral owing to Student Request

A student may request a deferral to a later cohort if their circumstances are such that they would
find it impossible to continue studying the programme with their current cohort. For example,
this might arise due to a change in domestic circumstances, redundancy or work pressure.

21 of 37
L5 Student Handbook Gulf Version 1 – L5DOL / March 2021
7.6.9 Deferral owing to failed Assessments

If a student has been referred twice on an assessment then they are deemed to have failed that
piece of work. In such situations, in addition to resubmitting the failed assessment, the student
must also re-attend the classroom learning and an administrative fee will be payable.

7.7 Assignment Assessment Process

Assessment
Assessment is the process of evaluating an individual’s attainment of knowledge,
understanding and skills. The CIPD will set assignments for all core units. Centres will be
required to mark the assignments and internally moderate the marks. The CIPD will conduct
moderation sampling and validate centre marking before the release of results to learners.

Assessment focus
Assessment for the CIPD Level 3 Foundation Certificate in People Practice is employer-driven
and aimed at real scenarios that learners may encounter in their future career.

Assessment grading
This qualification is not graded. Learners will receive either a Pass or Fail. All assessment criteria
must be met in order to achieve a Pass.

Qualification achievement
All assessments for this qualification are criterion referenced, based on the achievement of
specified learning outcomes.
To achieve a Pass for this qualification, a learner must have satisfied all the assessment criteria
for each core unit. If the complete qualification is not achieved, credit can be issued in the form
of a statement of standalone unit credit.
Statements of standalone unit credit will be subject to the currency of the existing qualification
and CIPD quality assurance checks. The CIPD’s decision will be final.

7.8 Cheating and Plagiarism
In order to maintain the academic integrity of the CIPD qualifications, Bradfield treats all
allegations of plagiarism or cheating seriously.

Plagiarism and cheating can occur both at Draft and Submission stage.

Students should adhere to the candidate declaration on every Assignment Cover Sheet, which is
reproduced here:

QUOTE
• I confirm that the work/evidence presented for assessment is my own unaided work.
• I have read the assessment regulations and understand that if I am found to have ‘copied’
from published work without acknowledgement, or from other candidate’s work, this may
be regarded as plagiarism which is an offence against the assessment regulations and leads
to failure in the relevant unit and formal disciplinary action.
• I agree to this work being subjected to scrutiny by textual analysis software if required.
• I understand that my work may be used for future academic/quality assurance purposes in
accordance with the provisions of Data Protection legislation.
• I understand that the work/evidence submitted for assessment may not be returned to me
and that I have retained a copy for my records.
• I understand that until such time as the assessment grade has been ratified through
internal and external quality assurance processes it is not final.
UNQUOTE

7.8.1 If an allegation of cheating or plagiarism is made or suspected by a tutor at Draft Stage

the tutor should contact the student directly via e-mail and retain a copy of this correspondence
for review by Director of Learning & Development, if necessary.

If the tutor believes that there may be some foundation to the allegation, they will:

1. Warn the student in writing that plagiarism and cheating is not acceptable and could result
in them being excluded from the course.

2. Ask the student to resubmit their work.

23 of 37
L5 Student Handbook Gulf Version 1 – L5DOL / March 2021
7.8.2 If a piece of work is formally submitted and an allegation of cheating or plagiarism is
made or suspected, the Tutor will send the assignment and a cover note explaining why they
think that the work is plagiarised by e-mail to the Director of Learning and Development for
investigation.

7.8.3 If the same student re-offends either on the same piece of work or another, the tutor
should refer the matter to the Director of Learning and Development.

If plagiarism or cheating are found to have occurred a second time, the student may be asked to
leave the course and / or exceptionally pay an administrative charge for their work to be re-
marked.

7.8.4 In severe cases of cheating or plagiarism even for a first offence students can be asked
to leave the courses.

7.8.5 Where a student is asked to leave the course the CIPD will be notified.

7.8.6 Where a student has been asked to leave the course for the above reasons they will not
be refunded their fees.

7.8.7 At Bradfield’s discretion, students may be asked to obtain confirmation that the work
they have submitted is their own. If this incurs a fee then this will be at a student’s own expense.

7.9 Passing your CIPD Programme

In addition to attending at least 80% of the tutor led classroom studies, students must submit all
assignments on the dates given unless extensions have been agreed and must pass each
assignment in order to receive their certificates or diplomas.

7.10 Length of Assignments & Word Count

The assignment briefs indicate the relevant word count. Appendices, diagrams and tables are
not included in the word count so long as their use is reasonable and appropriate. These should
be kept to a minimum.

24 of 37
L5 Student Handbook Gulf Version 1 – L5DOL / March 2021
There is a word count discretion of 10% on each activity making up an assignment. This means
that students can go above or below by 10%, e.g. on a 1,000 word section the lower limit is 900
words and the upper limit is 1,100 words.

Where word count is required students should indicate the number of words at the top of the
first page of the assignment. Where an assignment is split into sections with differing word
counts, students should start each new section on a new page and note the word count for the
section at the top of the page.

7.11 Use of Non-Employing Organisations for Assignments

Tutors can insist that students base and use illustrations from the organisation currently
employing them for the completion of ANY or ALL assignments.
Students can be referred, if they do not follow this instruction.
Students who have recently changed roles or are not employed should discuss the options
available with their tutor prior to commencing work on their assignments.

7.12 Portal Submission and Changing Organisation

After a 1st submission students require clear and explicit approval to change the organisation
upon which they based their answer. Only after receiving such written approval (which would
need to be justified) would a student be able to change organisations. Students should contact
Training Support if they require guidance.
Once a submission has been made, this counts towards the student’s submission allowance.

7.13 References

It is a requirement for a Level 5 assignment that students provide references and a bibliography
(an alphabetical list of sources at the end of the work).

Tutors encourage wider reading and such reading, if cited or used, should ideally be referenced
and/or included in bibliography.

Harvard referencing is commonly used and provides a recognised format for works cited.
Students are encouraged to use this if they reference their work. Examples of this approach
can be found at:
http://www.staffs.ac.uk/support_depts/infoservices/learning_support/refzone/harvard/

25 of 37
L5 Student Handbook Gulf Version 1 – L5DOL / March 2021
The following (or similar) are not acceptable as references and you should avoid using them:

https://www.wikipedia.org/

http://www.termpaperwarehouse.com

http://www.studymode.com

• Students should also avoid using sites from which pre-written assignments can be
purchased.

7.14 Submission Procedure

• Students are required to submit all assignments to our website at www.bradfield.co.uk

by the deadline date using and including the cover sheet, which is available to you on our
website.

• The cover sheet is an essential part of the submission procedure. It is available from the
Learning Materials section on the Bradfield Portal. Your work cannot be marked without
this. If you do not submit a cover sheet then the procedure referred to in 7.14.1 will
apply.

• You must also acknowledge that you have understood and completed all of the actions
indicated on the cover sheet.

The submission must be one Microsoft Office file of no more than 4 Megabytes for each
assignment only, including appendices. Files should be in Microsoft Word so that we can confirm
a word count, if necessary. PowerPoint presentations may be included as part of the submission.
If the submission contains more than one file, they may be zipped together to create one final
file for the on-line submission. Appendices must be scanned and inserted if necessary.

The file uploaded to the Bradfield Portal will be the one that is assessed, so students must check
that they are submitting the correct document.

It is a student’s responsibility to submit the correct document.

7.14.1 Uploading an Incorrect Document

Students are asked to check that the document they have uploaded to the Portal is the correct
one. By way of illustration an incorrect document could be a blank document, one that has no
assignment cover sheet or one that cannot be read.

26 of 37
L5 Student Handbook Gulf Version 1 – L5DOL / March 2021
If an error has been made then students must immediately (within 1 hour) email Training Support
(trainingsupport@bradfield.co.uk) and attach the correct document. Failure to do this will result
in the originally uploaded document being deemed as a submission.

7.15 Extensions
An extension is the request of a student to have additional time to complete an assignment.
Extensions are only provided for assignments (not individual activities that go to make up
assignments).

Students who need an extension must request this at least seven days before the submission
date. Requests should be made via the Bradfield Portal; they cannot be accepted by email.

If approved, the new deadline will automatically be three weeks from the original deadline.

Only one extension will be granted for each submission. Extensions can be requested for both
first and second submissions.

It is not possible to have a further extension on the same assignment or to give any more time
than three weeks for an extension.

It will be at a tutor’s discretion whether or not to grant an extension. Students may be asked to
submit appropriate documentation in support of their request. Where students are granted an
extension, tutors will only guarantee to give feedback on drafts if the drafts are sent to the tutor
before the original deadline. It will be at the tutor’s discretion as to whether they are able to
give feedback on a draft received within the extension timeframe, but outside the normal
deadline for draft submissions (please refer to Section 5.5).

It is a student’s responsibility to submit work on time.

7.16 Deadlines

7.16.1 Deadlines: Missing a First Submission Deadline

If a student misses a deadline for a first submission without having an approved extension, they
will still be able to submit their work, but it will be counted as a second submission. A new
deadline for submission will be given, which will be six weeks after the original date for
submission.

27 of 37
L5 Student Handbook Gulf Version 1 – L5DOL / March 2021
7.16.2 Deadlines: Second Submissions

Second submissions are assignments that:

1. Have already been submitted by the first submission date but referred; OR
2. Have been submitted after the first deadline has passed but no extension has been arranged.

The deadline for second submissions will be three weeks from the original submission date.

7.16.3 Deadlines: Missing a Second Submission Deadline

If a student misses a second submissions deadline then they will fail the assignment and they will
be unsuccessful in obtaining their qualification. In these circumstances the student should
contact Training Support at trainingsupport@bradfield.co.uk for further guidance.

7.17 Referrals
If a student’s work is referred at first submission stage then they will be given a new deadline for
a second submission. This will be three weeks from the original submission date. However, if
their work is referred twice (once after first submission and again after the second submission)
then the student will need to re-attend the classroom training and retake the assignment,
incurring additional fees.

7.18 Self-study Workbooks

Students who are studying on one of our blended learning programmes will be given self-study
workbooks, which have been written specifically for students who are learning with us. These
workbooks have been designed to support the taught sessions with home-study guided learning
activities.

7.19 Evaluation Form

At the end of each block students will be asked to complete an evaluation form. This is a
necessary part of our quality control process. All students are encouraged to complete this and
do not have to identify themselves on the form.
