Comparative Study By Bao Hoang

Through the comparative study, I will analyze and examine ¨Young girl Next To Lilies¨ of the famous Vietnamese oil painter To Ngoc
Van and the two of Gustav Klimt, which will be ¨Lady with a Fan¨ and Portrait of Adele Bloch”¨. In addition, I will discuss common
themes and emotions conveyed throughout all works, expressing tranquility and the adoration of life through use of subject material
and technique. Lastly, I will examine the connections and sources of inspiration between my own creations and these artworks.
Evaluation of Cultural Significance of
To Ngoc Van
Vietnam’s Modern art was a significant change in Vietnam itself as it was the beginning of the Western influence on
Vietnam’s culture and society after France became the “colonial master” of all of Indochina. Though France’s reform of
westernization of Vietnamese culture and the introduction of modernization, art forms such as painting have been greatly
inspired by European techniques and elements. During the time, To Ngoc Van became one of the four leading painters of
his time or also known as the first four masters of Vietnam painters. Van saw art as shaping reality, not merely reflecting it,
and that he used Western artistic values to judge Vietnamese art, architecture, and decoration. His perspective on art at the
time, like that of most of his cohorts, was heavily influenced by Western thought, as were the perspectives of this
generation of young intellectuals toward politics, fashion, and society itself.

To Ngoc Anh works shifted from the beauty of Vietnam combined with Western
painting methods to more patriotic propaganda. Van uses the Western ideals of
aesthetic that he had learned during his time at the Indochina Fine Arts Academy and
incorporates the techniques he had learned into his paintings to express his love for
Vietnam and the beauty that surrounds it. Van always rejected the traditional
Vietnamese art such as village folk prints and calligraphic features as “real art” as he
deemed did not express the same meaningful modernism that he wanted. His arts
are always influenced by French art despite his resistance against French colonial
rule.

Analysis of Formal Qualities
❖ Van establishes asymmetrical balance through the form that the girl is in.
The abtrusic pose that the girl is in creates the overall balance of the piece,
with one of her hand over her head and the other at her stomach. Van also
establishes balance on the left and right by placing the girl on the left side of
the piece and the flower vase on the right. This brings the subject out to the
audience and let the viewers know which space to focus on and which is the
background.

❖ The hand touching the flowers connect the whole painting together, giving unity
to whole piece. With the hand connected to the flowers it gives attention to the
flowers and the vase and establish the foreground and background

❖ The white Ao Dai (Vietnamese Dress) contrast the earthy tone colors in
the background hence emphasizing on the figure. The texture on the train
of the dress bring rhythm to the piece as viewers can imagine the
movement of the silk clothing and the ripples that it causes through the
texture of the silk train.
❖ The intense shading gives more form to the girl´s body. Her intricate pose
guides the viewer's where to look. Van purposely makes the hands ,that guide
the viewer's to look at other objects, more darkers then the objects that he also
want the viewers to take. The contrast created makes the viewer take in the
whole painting and not focus on the woman figure only.

Evaluation of Cultural Significance of Gustav Klimt
During the end of the 19th century, Klimt found the Vienna Secession along with other members. The group
was to create an independent art scene that promoted young artists and showcase works from foreign artists. After the
death of his father and brother, Klimt started to look for a new style after the personal episode. During this time, Klimt
was able to find solace in the Japanese aesthetic and incorporate it with many of his works for his exhibits. According
to many historians, the influence of Japanese art was first introduced by Klimt and the Secessionists to the Viennese
society and followed the Japonisme movement of artworks such as Van Gogh’s Portrait of Pere Tanguy (1987) and
Paul Gauguin’s Still Life with Japanese Woodcut, which was called Japonisme. Japonisme became a western craze in
the 19th century after Japan opened up its ports to Western Trade in 1854. Japan’s reconnection to the West caused a
boom of Japanese art and crafts into Western society which had a huge impact on art and design. The striking
characteristics of Japanese art, with its flat planes, bold colours and dramatic stylisation, proved an inspiration
throughout a host of movements, from Impressionism to Art Nouveau and the Aesthetic Movement.

Feb 2020,

Gustav Klimt was a fan of East Asian art and avidly collected many works of arts from woodcuts, Noh masks to
ceramics and textile designs. The inspiration for Japanese art can be seen in many of his works e.g. Portrait of Adele
Bloch-Bauer I (1907), Portrait of Eugenia Primavesi (1913/14), and Baby (Cradle) (1917/18). Japanese art as a whole is
graphic, ornamental, linear and planar. These design principles greatly influenced Klimt’s approach to drawing and
became an integral part of his style. Around 1909, Klimt’s oeuvre saw a change, as his works during this period took a
subtler tone in the ornamentation. His enchantment with Japanese art was by no means a passing phase, as its
influence runs strongly through his later works. The Japanese fabric designs which recur in his other paintings are used
as figural backgrounds. During his lifetime, Klimt never actually set foot in Japan, but his fascination for oriental art that
Japan offer can be seen in various pieces of his (Sjaastad 2019).

● The lack of dimension and form is established by Klimt´s choice of

outlining the female subject creates the sense of flat plane. Although
the female subject is standing in a certain angle, there is no sense of
form in the figure at all.

● Klimt´s repetition of oriental patterns creates an unity in the piece

and guides viewers to the overall painting instead of only a certain
part of the painting. By using oriental pattern all around, the viewers
will focus on the piece as a whole instead of focusing on one place of
the painting if only one part of the piece is painted with the oriental
patterns.

● The yellow tone of the background contrasts the brown that the lady is
wearing which helps the subject to not blend into the elaborate
background as well. Although both the background and the clothing on
the lady have intricate patterns, they don't come as overwhelming but
instead compliment each other and create a sense of rhythm in the
piece.

● The use of the geometric pattern on the lady's sleeve creates texture, it
creates an illusion of the fabric ruffling despite the flatness of the overall
painting. Texture can also be seen in the background pattern as Klimt´s
orangish brushstrokes on top of the yellow creates an aged effect to the
paper.

Analysis of Formal Qualities
● Klimt´s usage of lines creates an element of restraint on to Adele, the lines used in the
painting are very erect and stiff. This emphasis and represent her status as the viewers
have to look up to her because of how Klimt position her in a vertically. Furthermore the
vertical lines on the her dress brings out the texture on the dress and guides the
viewer's to the arrangement of flowers at the bottom of the painting.

● The circle shape of the hat emphasize on where the viewers should look as it is such a
distinct shape that differ from the whole painting. Along with the opaque black as a color,
the hat draws and frame the attention around Adele's face which then adequately create
the effect of Adele towering over the viewers

● The brush strokes on the color blocks behind the lady adds movement to the overall
painting. In addition to the brush stroke, the two soldiers riding their horses creates an
illusion of movement, as viewers the use of the surrounding brushstrokes create the
impression that the horses are galloping across the painting behind the lady. This creates
a contrast between the still Adele and the moving background.

● By placing Adele exactly in the middle of the painting, Klimt establishes symmetrical
balance to the piece. Although the two side are not exactly the same, Klimt balances
the different sides through Adele giving the viewers a sense that the painting are
symmetrical even though it does not exactly transfer.

● The arrangement of the flowers gives unity to the painting as it gives the onlookers
something to look at every crook of the painting and it connects the painting together
through the use of flowers. The color of the flowers creates a smooth transition from

● The use of form in both paintings leads to the different

Klimt’s flat figure blends in with the background due to
minimal use of form.
