Many studies show social media networks have a very strong impact on external
workplace communication. What about their impacts on internal workplace
communication? Discuss and give your opinion.

Social media networking is the use of internet-based social media platforms to keep in touch

with family, friends, clients, colleagues (Kenton,2021). Not only people you know, even people

you have never met, people who share common topics or interests can also meet through social

media. Social media networks include Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and more. According to

Statista research, Facebook is now the largest and most popular social media network, with

1.84 billion people using the platform daily as of December 31, 2020. Social media networks

are not only useful for everyday social interaction, but they are also useful at the workplace. It

is divided into external communication and internal communication. External communication

is communication with people outside the company, such as recommending and introducing

the company's products or services to customers, responding to customer information or

complaints, and so on. This increases the visibility of the company's brand, helps maintain the

company's reputation. Internal communication is communication with people in the company

such as reporting work to others or collaborating with other departments. Effective

communication can lead to good effects, on the contrary, ineffective communication can lead

to bad effects.
Social media networks can improve cohesion among employees and thus strengthen the

relationship between employees. Employees can have a seamless conversation with other

colleagues to discuss the work. Any problems can be communicated in time, speeding up the

work progress and improving work efficiency. Because of working together for a long time, it

is easy to improve the friendship between employees. In addition, social media networks can

improve employee engagement. When a company gives employees access to company social

media from work devices, it makes employees feel trusted. This increases employee

engagement, which translates into motivation to work. When employees feel that they are

valued by the company, they will increase their loyalty, work hard for the company, and will

not betray the company. Next, social media networks can quickly send information to each

employee. Social media networks can be used whether posting work assignments to employees

or announcing company events. This also ensures that every employee can receive information

on time and will not miss the information notified by others because they are not at the

workstation and will not delay work because of misrepresenting the details of the information

from other colleagues. Besides that, social media networks can increase employee recognition.

Companies can praise high-performing employees on social media to give employees a sense

of accomplishment and keep working hard. Other colleagues can also congratulate that person

and increase the interaction between employees so that employees can better understand the

current affairs of the company. In addition, social media networks can also help employees

resolve work problems faster. When employees encounter problems at work, being able to ask

their questions on social media networks and can receive a variety of solutions. Even if no

solution is available, it also can open a new solution.

Social media networks can create harassment issues. Because of the need for frequent work

docking, the contact information of each employee is open, and the contact information of other

employees can be obtained at will. For example, if Xiaoming develops a favorable impression

of Xiaomei and obtains Xiaomei's contact information, he will continue to send harassing

messages to Xiaomei. This can make Xiaomei feel troubled and scared, this will make her

afraid to go to the company. If Xiao Ming not only sends harassing messages to Xiaomei but

also stalks Xiaomei. This will also threaten the safety of Xiaomei's life. Of course, this kind of

thing not only occurs in the workplace but also daily life. When encountering the problem of

being harassed, you should report or call the police in time, and you should ask someone to

accompany you when you travel. In addition to this, social media networks can become

platforms for the dissemination of false or negative news. For example, posting a negative post

about an employee and randomly labeling him for animal cruelty based on a single photo.

These unsubstantiated things, being randomly posted on social media networks, can cause great

distress to the parties involved. And colleagues will also doubt the character of the colleague

and public opinion attack him because of these negative comments, which will affect the

reputation of the employee. The company will also fire the employee because of concerns about

the unity of the employee. Besides that, social media networks also cause a potential loss of

productivity. Some employees may spend too much time on social media, which affects

productivity and slows down work progress. When you're tired from work, social media use in

moderation can act to unwind and take your mind off the work. When employees have a proper

rest, they can keep their minds awake and more engaged in their work. However, some

employees with low self-control become obsessed with social media so they forget the time

and neglect their work. When you can control the time of using social media as a leisure method,

it means that you can continue to use this method to let you relax the pressure of work. On the

contrary, if you can't control the time of using social media, you are the best Looking for
another way to decompress. If an employee uses social media for a long time, other employees

will see it and follow suit, which will affect the work atmosphere.

In conclusion, if social media networks are used properly, it can improve cohesion among

employees and thus strengthen the relationship between employees, can improve employee

engagement, can quickly send information to each employee, can increase employee

recognition, and can help employees resolve work problems faster. Conversely, if social media

networks are misused, they can create harassment issues, can become platforms for the

dissemination of false or negative news, and cause a potential loss of productivity. All things

have two sides, there are advantages and disadvantages. Some people will feel that social media

networks do more pros than cons, but some people feel that social media networks do more

harm than good, it depends on who is using them. If you use it properly, you will feel that it is

helping you, whether it is work, study, or life. If you feel like it's holding you back, it means

you don't have enough willpower so often forget why you turned on your social media network

and got attracted to other content.
