As per Clause 7.4.1 of IRC:SP:48, for purpose of
excavation the soil is classified in three broad
categories.
a) Ordinary/Heavy Soil: This can be cut to side slopes
of 1:1 to 1:2(H:V). Soil mixed with boulders is also
deemed to come under this category.
b) Ordinary/Soft Rock : This can be cut to side slopes
of 1:4 to 1:8 (H:V)
