This document contains two typical cross section designs for road improvement projects. Type I shows a standard cross section with earthen shoulders and utility corridors on both sides, along with earth fill and pavement layers. Type II adds a raised central carriageway with cover drains and footpaths on both sides, with varying earth fill heights and additional paved and drain corridors. Notes explain requirements for side slopes in cuttings based on soil type, and classification of soils as ordinary, soft rock, or hard rock for excavation purposes.

1.The side slope in cutting should be maintained as per clause
7.4.1 of IRC:SP:48. As per Clause 7.4.1 of IRC:SP:48, for purpose of excavation the soil is classified in three broad categories. a) Ordinary/Heavy Soil: This can be cut to side slopes of 1:1 to 1:2(H:V). Soil mixed with boulders is also deemed to come under this category. b) Ordinary/Soft Rock : This can be cut to side slopes of 1:4 to 1:8 (H:V) 13000 c)Hard Rock: This can stand vertical or even 1000 1500 1500 7000 1500 1500 1000 overhanging cut depending on the type/mass and dip Utility Drain Paved CL Paved Drain Utility of rock.
