Conditional sentence type 3

A third conditional sentence express a past idea that did not occur. The conditional
sentence type 3 express an imagined result of that past event that did not occur. In other
words, it is unreal
Function :
Conditional sentence type 3 refer to conditions not possible in the past and possible
outcomes in the past. This sentence is really a supposition and unreal, because it’s too late
to do now and the result is not possible. There are always implications of regret in
conditional sentence type 3. In this sentence, the time is past and the situation is
supposition or unreal.
In this sentence can use modal on main clause and not would. The function is to
clarify or explain the level of certainty, permission, or recommendation about result or last
result.
Structure :
The dependent clause or if clause of the third conditional begins with “if” and uses
the past perfect tense. The independent clause or main clause of the third conditional uses
“would” have plus the past participle of verb.
