Race, Gender, and Class in America

Race – a form of human classification that differentiates people based on their physical and

cultural characteristics.

Class – a form of human classification that categorizes people based on their socioeconomic

status.

Gender – refers to the behaviors, attitudes, and roles that society associates with a particular sex,

which lead to the identifying people based on their masculinity or femininity.

Sexuality – refers to an individual’s sexual attractions, feelings, and thoughts towards others.

Privilege – refers to when an individual unfairly has an upper hand in gaining access to

socioeconomic and/or political opportunities compared to others based on physical ability, race,

class, and/or cultural background among other social constructs.

Intersectionality – the concept of overlapping social categorizations such as gender, race, and

class that lead to distinct forms of discrimination or disadvantage to people. For instance, I am a

heterosexual African American young adult and dating a Latin American woman. As well, I
grew up in Texas, but moved to California for my bachelor’s degree at the University of

California.
