The Rayan Boy Tragedy Makes Thousands of Wells

Closed in Saudi Arabia

The tragic death of a Moroccan boy named Rayan (5)


who was trapped in a 32-meter deep well for 5 days
captured the world's attention. Even the tragedy
made Saudi Arabia secure thousands of wells that are
no longer in use.
Reported from AFP Wednesday (9/2/2022), the Saudi
Ministry of Environment, Water and Agriculture made
mitigations to prevent similar incidents in the
country. Saudi Arabia announced steps to secure
abandoned wells that were no longer in use on its
territory.
According to Rayan's mother's statement on the Al-
Aoula television station, her son fell into a well on
Tuesday (1/2) afternoon.
The story of Rayyan which became a tragedy began
when little Rayyan was allowed to go play near his
house.
That afternoon, Rayan's family allowed the child to play
on Tuesday afternoon.
While playing, little Rayan accidentally fell into a well
that was narrow and difficult to reach.
"In an instant, the boy fell into a well that I was
repairing. I couldn't sleep at night," his father, Khaled
Awram told the media.
The family who knew that the boy had fallen into the well
immediately tried to send help."To ensure the safety of
everyone... the ministry filled and fortified 2,450 unused
wells," the Saudi ministry said in a statement.
The ministry continues to work to fill the remaining wells
that are still open," the statement added.
In its statement, the Saudi Ministry also called on
residents to report the presence of unsafe or uncovered
wells. "Your report will protect you and others," the
Saudi ministry said in a statement.
It is known, Rayan (5) was trapped in a 32-meter-deep
well for five days and was unable to get out alive after a
rescue attempt that caught the world's attention failed
last Saturday (5/2).
The boy was buried in the village where he lives,
Ighrane, in the mountainous Rif area, Morocco, on
Monday (7/2) local time.
