The line graph illustrates and forecasts the number of births and deaths in New Zealand

over the 200-year period, starting from 1901.

Overall, while New Zealand’s birth rates witnessed a strong upward trend in the second

half of the twentieth century, the number of mortality rate is predicted to overtake the

those of birth at the end of period shown.

Starting the examined period with approximately 20,000, the birth ratio witnessed a

substantial boom of 45,000 cases and reached its peak at around 65,000, before

fluctuating down to 55,000 in the recent year. From this point, the number of born babies

is expected to steadily decrease to just under 45,000 at the end of the century.

On the contrary, in 1901, with less than 50% of the birth rate, the mortality rate gradually

increased from 9,000 to 29,000 over the entire 20th century. Then, this rate is expected

to undergo a rapid growth, surpassing birth rate in 2041, before leveling off at around

57,000 until the end.
