MRTS PHASE-I

1. The first phase of the Mass Rapid Transit System (MRTS) from Chennai Beach to Thirumylai for a
length of 8.55 km. was taken up for implementation by Government of India (GoI) through the
Ministry of Railways in 1983-84.
2. The MRTS Phase-I is on surface for a length of 2.75 km. and elevated for a length of 5.80 km. Out of
8 stations, 5 are elevated viz., Chintadripet, Thiruvallikeni, Light House, Mundakakanni Amman koil &
Thirumyilai and 3 at surface level viz., Chennai Beach, Chennai Fort & Chennai Park. There are two
tracks for uninterrupted operation of train service between the terminal stations. The system can
cater to about 6 lakh passenger-trips per day.

MRTS PHASE-II
1. Jointly implemented by MRTS Phase-II from Thirumylai to Velachery for a distance of 11.165 km,
by GoI and GoTN commenced in 1997-98. The revised administrative cost of the project is
Rs.919.95 crore.
2. The GoI and the GoTN have agreed to share the cost of the project excluding the cost of
Government land in the ratio 33:67 respectively. The GoTN have already released Rs.616.375
crores. The cumulative expenditure up to April 2017 is Rs.912.10 crores.
3. The MRTS Phase-II project has been fully commissioned since 19-11-2007.

MRTS PHASE-II EXTENSION


1. The MRTS Phase-II Extension project, developed on single pillars along the median of the Inner
Ring Road (IRR) from MBI Road to St. Thomas Road for a distance of about 3.5 km. and the
balance length on an stand-alone segment of rail alignment. The revised administrative cost of
the project is Rs.732.89 crore.
2. With the GoI agreeing to implement the project jointly with GoTN sharing the cost respectively
33% by GoTN and 67% by GoI. The cumulative release by the GoTN Rs.330.50 Crores. The
cumulative expenditure up to April 2017 is Rs.387.85 crores.
3. The project envisages construction of 2 intermediate stations viz. Puzhuthivakkam and
Adambakkam RTS stations. The St. Thomas mount station is the terminal station for MRTS. The
station is an integrated station complex, integrating with MRTS, Metro Rail and Suburban rail
system. The project has been commenced in April 2008. The sub-structure and super structure
works are in progress.
