Indigo depicts Mahatma Gandhi's campaign for
the downtrodden peasants of Champaran.
They were sharecroppers for the British
planters. The peasants used to live in dismal
conditions and were obligated to plant Indigo
as part of a contract.

Their position deteriorated since Bihar had a


landlord system at the time. As a result, Gandhi
made the decision to fight injustice. He fought for a
year to obtain justice for the peasants. Following
that, it supported the peasants in building courage
and an understanding of their basic rights.

- Shukla paid a visit to Muzaffarpur. He gathered all


of the information. It was discussed with Kriplani.
Lawyers were met, reprimanded, and the legal
standpoint was understood. The met peasants
had smelled unrest.
- Fear-strikes among peasants have been
observed. He believes he should bestow the
weapon of bravery and fearlessness upon them.
Role of lawyers
They brought the case to court and were
successful in collecting fees. Gandhi scolded
them for misleading and duping the peasants.
They assisted with legal matters. They were,
however, unsure if he would be imprisoned.

When Gandhi was incarcerated, he pleaded for


justice for sharecroppers. Lawyers consider
themselves to be desertionists. Gandhi's Civil
Disobedience Movement was backed by them.
They assisted him in filing complaints against
landlords.
