Addition and Subtraction 3- and 4-digit: Lesson 6: relating addition and subtraction

60-minute lesson

1. On the Smart Board, open document ‘relating addition and subtraction’ in OneDrive
(attached copy).
2. Ask the students to answer these questions in less than 1 minute (there should be an
uproar because they are 4-digit subtraction equations, and they will not be able to).
3. Ask the students how smart they think you are and ask them if they think you could
answer all the questions in less than one minute.
4. Regardless of the class response, proceed to answer the questions (it will be easy
because they have a related/corresponding question right next to each).

5. When the class is astonished by your skills, ask if any of them know how you did it so
quickly (they will think you memorized the answers).
6. After the guesses subside, draw a vertical line down the middle of the page. Give it a
minute and ask if they now know how you answered the questions.
7. Draw a horizontal line under the 2 questions in the top left corner.
8. Some students may now see the pattern.
9. On the Smart Board play the relating addition and subtraction video.

add-subtract-10/v/relating-addition-and-subtraction
10. Using the same concept as the video, show an example with 2-digit numbers on the
white board, followed by an example using 3-digit numbers, and then 4-digit.
11. Test the students understanding by putting examples on the board and have the
students do the equations on whiteboards and show the answers in a waterfall manner.
12. Keep doing more examples if needed.

13. Distribute a worksheet to the students to solidify their understanding and to practice
addition and subtraction to 10000 (attached).
