Margaret Hilda Roberts was born on 13 October 1925 in Grantham,
Lincolnshire. She studied at Oxford University. In 1951, she married
Denis Thatcherwith whom she had two children.

Political Career

Thatcher became a Conservative member of parliament for Finchley in North London in 1959, serving
as its MP until 1992. In 1979 Thatcher became prime minister.

With Thatcher as prime minister, the UK economy improved. However, many people lost their jobs
during this time and had little money.

One of many controversial elements of her political career was her role in the Falklands War. This
was a war over small British islands near Argentina.

Thatcher was famous for being anti-communist. She was a good friend of the American president
Ronald Reagan. During her time in office, she was nicknamed the “Iron Lady” by the Soviets.
