Even though it’s made of 3 triangles, the shape does not look so simple. That's because it’s too unbalanced and because the relations between shapes could be simpler ‘This almost 9 sight ow bu 3s 0s adding complarhy. the characters gana direction is lesing tthe igh Wd be much more simple and ey to undertnd "We could add intention and mare balance fe ip we 0 wth sight ne the beck lie othe righ swell, ae ip by adding smal and simple dette We need @ more stable base for our character Meh ad the seas ard he wes ops so we can add legs, for example. and's nervous or ailed because hein shuty Another way would be to balance it out by sina i ply as a leg and adding the other one with the same But THEN, tha structure will be more like in number 3 the triangular legs make sense because they fit in the character angular shapes. if we for example pur ceisted legs in such a simple angular character they'll look like if they were legs from another character and look weird. this small circle is too small to make an impact on the shape thus not part of the structure. the character with the structure as it is now looks too generic BUT if we exaggerate a little bit the proportions and we place the arms in a “weird” position (too low, near the legs) it looks more interesting. We can add some details to tell a story. A sign and a backpack and he’s now a hitch-hiker trying to get to Yerevan La this small squares are too small to make an impact on the overall shape of the character, so the core would be much more simpler, and then we build on that. This character has a base, and is simple, and is a vampire. BUT we could simplify and give more unity to it if we merge the shapes with a straight line, so it does not look like to stocked shapes and looks like a whole. ALSO the details we add should be more geometric to give it more unity in its looks the boxy arms are look more natural with in this case because of the boxy body. nice idea, but the base is too narrow to support the character. with the same concept i totally would try it the other way around. making the cone like it was the “hat” and the three scoops the “body” the character is interesting, although if we take him to more defined geometric shapes, its easier to be rapidly understood and easily remembered. Also balance the head to the middle helps avoid the feeling that the forehead is falling to the front. v1] Bu Nf wu itworks, has atitude, but i think the proportions ere too human, it woult totaly try different proportions. Don't be afraid to exaggerate. not so human in proportions (super long torso compared to legs) but would try other proportions toe. Be carefull with the long torsos, sometimes they look a litle off {ia my experience) it's because the spine is kind of leaning forward, and we have the big “belly” and the head coming really out of the body, that gives us the sense of instability ‘The other one looks more grounded even though he also has @ head coming out to the front. it doesnt mean that the “spine” has to always be vertical 100% but it has to be supported by the pose and the other parts to no feel like falling Also is much more unsettling something that’s ALMOST vertical, that something that is definitely and absolutely tilted it works, but maybe tr could also try different options like adding a head instead separate the legs, while sil using straight lines of heving the face in the body, different arms, legs. 0 it doesn’t look so cluttered. But | think that due to the character bein ight ine and | would do big arms to mantain the equilibrium. s0 angular, | would keep on working with straight lines. Again, if he hes legas, they should be a litle more separated so he's in a more relaxed positon. Aso ift has details like the hair in this case, should be also be simple and kind of geometrical to give coherence to the design. Ihe has arms, they should be a litle longer, plus he looks ready for a fight with the crazy expression. he’s a tough fruit. Ihe has wings, and the leaves are the wings, they should be alittle bigger, more proportionate to the body? Is what | said before, even if i's @ completly fictional world, we need to have some rules common to our understanding of things Again, the realistic arms make the character look less iconic, less simple If he has strong arms because he uses them to walk, we can make them big, to reflect strenght, but with less detail. Exercise Do a set of 3 characters, with the new things we discussed. They have to be walking characters, having legs to move around. Use basic shapes to give it structure. You can add shapes, but you can also substract. You can use part the shapes or transform them. For example. Just the curve of a part of the circle. You can deform the square, but it always have to have 4 sides. You can change the proportions of the triangle but it has to have 3 sides. We are adding details, simple elements that tells a little story, or give us more information about who these characters are. You have to try many things, but you have to decide which 3 you're going choose.
