Educational Philosophy

Summer 2017
Reflection
Dr. King has always been one of my favorite professors. I was pleased to see he would be
instructing my first class because I was a bit nervous about beginning. This course was a great
starting point because the discussions were open and interesting, as there were not any right or
wrong answers. The goal was to develop my own philosophy with steps to get me there. It
guided me to my own views on education, and I have been able to use that knowledge for years
after taking the class.
The case studies were one of my favorite parts of the course. I was able to use the various
philosophies I had been learning to understand different teachers’ styles It explained why
teachers teaching the same content did so in differing ways.
Working through all the assignments and forums, I was able to develop my personal education
philosophy. I had to think deeply about the student roles and the teacher roles in education.
Taking the time to figure out what was meaningful to me was not easy, but it required me to
understand who I was as an educator. I was able to reflect on my core values and beliefs about
education during this class. I feel it has equipped me to analyze my actions and see the negative
and positives in my classroom.
I have revisited my education philosophy several times through the years, and I have found it has
remained true to who I am as a teacher. I understand that values evolve, so my philosophy has
and will change somewhat as I grow and learn more…especially when I take on an administrator
role.
