Rules and Regulations for the


MA in Communication and Media Studies

Eligibility
R.PG.CMS.1. Applicants for admission to the MA in Communication and Media Studies should
have passed a Bachelor’s Degree Examination in any discipline with 40% marks in
the theory papers at the external examination from Sardar Patel University, or any
other university established by law to be eligible for admission.

Academic Aspects
R.PG.CMS.2. The intake on the course shall be 30 seats in all, with 5 of these seats to be filled on
the donor’s recommendations from NV Patel College of Pure and Applied
Sciences, Sardar Patel University, Vallabh Vidyanagar.

R.PG.CMS.3. The percentage of marks obtained by a candidate in the theory papers at the
external examination at the Third Year Examination in a given subject of
specialisation shall be considered for the purpose of merit in deciding admissions.

R.PG.CMS.4. If the number of applications is twice the number of seats available, then all the
applicants shall be required to take an entrance test and appear at an interview,
which shall be compulsory.

R.PG.CMS.5. The entrance test, if any, be required, shall be through a test paper of 100 marks,
with (a) GK/Current Affairs (30), and (b) Writing Skill (70). The section on
Writing Skill (70) shall be divided into (i) 30 objective items in multiple-choice
format on English Grammar and Usage (30) and (ii) Essay in English (40).
Admissions shall be granted on merit, with the marks obtained in the test having a
weighting of 40%.

R.PG.CMS.6. The Medium of Instruction shall be English.

R.PG.CMS.7. Practicals shall be arranged in each of the papers offered and these shall carry a
weighting of 50% per course. Study Tours and Local Visits shall be arranged as per
the needs of the course and availability of time.

Examinations
R.PG.CMS.8. Examinations for the MA in Communication and Media Studies shall be conducted
under the Semester System. There shall thus be two Semester Examinations. The
academic year shall be divided into two Semesters, and each of the two Semesters
shall run for 16 Weeks.

R.PG.CMS.9. No candidate shall be admitted to any Semester Examination for Postgraduate


Diploma in Media Studies unless the Head of the Department of Communication

and Media Studies certifies that the candidate concerned has (a) attended the
courses of study to his/her satisfaction; and (b) obtained at least 50% marks in the
aggregate in both the courses in the Internal Evaluation conducted by the
Department of Communication and Media Studies.

R.PG.CMS.10. Candidates desirous of appearing at the MA in Communication and Media Studies


shall get their duly filled applications in prescribed form forwarded through the
Head, Department of Communication and Media Studies, to the Registrar, Sardar
Patel University on or before the date prescribed for the purpose under the relevant
University Ordinances.

R.PG.CMS.11. The medium of Examination shall be English.

R.PG.CMS.12. The ratio of weighting between the Internal Evaluation and External Examination
shall be 50:50. Papers shall be set, as stipulated in the structure of the MA
programme at the Examinations to be conducted at the end of each semester I. The
ratio of weighting between the Theory and Practicals shall be 50:50 per Paper. The
marks earmarked for the Internal Evaluation will be distributed as shown in the
Table below.

Note: Practicals shall be organised separately during the Internal Evaluation as an
integral part of the course concerned. These shall be fixed and notified in advance
by the Head, Department of Communication and Media Studies.

R.PG.CMS.13. The standard of passing shall be 40%, and a candidate shall thus be required to
obtain a minimum of 20 marks each both in Theory and Practicals in any given
Paper to pass the examination in the concerned paper. This shall be the case with
all the 16 papers.

R.PG.CMS.14. (a) A candidate failing in the Semester I of MA Examination shall be permitted to


pursue courses for Semester II of the MA Examination but shall not be
permitted to go to the Semester III until he/she clears all the courses in the
Semester I.

(b) A candidate failing in the Semester II of MA Examination shall be permitted to


pursue courses for Semester III of the MA Examination but shall not be
permitted to go to the Semester IV until he/she clears all the courses of the
Semester II.

(c) A candidate failing in the Semester III of MA Examination shall be permitted


to pursue courses for Semester IV of the MA Examination but his/her result at
MA shall not be declared until he/she passes in all the courses in the Semester
III.

R.PG.CMS.15. No candidate shall be permitted to reappear at any Semester Examination that


he/she has already passed under any circumstance.

R.PG.CMS.16. Marksheets issued to a successful candidate at each Semester Examination shall


show marks obtained out of 100 per Paper making a total of 400 marks. However

the marksheets of Semester IV Examination shall, in addition to this, shall also
show marks obtained by the candidate out of a grand total 1600 marks, ie the
results of all the four semesters

R.PG.CMS.17. Award of Class


(a) A successful candidate shall be placed in Pass Class if he/she has obtained at
least 40% or more marks in the aggregate of all Semesters in the University
Examination and at least 40% or more marks but less than 48% or more marks
in the aggregate of all Semesters in Internal Examinations.

(b) A successful candidate shall be placed in Second Class if he/she has obtained at
least 48% or more marks in the aggregate of all Semesters in the University
Examination and at least 48% or more marks but less than 60% or more marks
in the aggregate of all Semesters in Internal Examinations.

(c) A successful candidate shall be placed in First Class if he/she has obtained at
least 60% or more marks in the aggregate of all Semesters in the University
Examination and at least 60% or more marks but less than 70% or more marks
in the aggregate of all Semesters in Internal Examinations.

(d) A successful candidate shall be placed in First Class with Distinction if he/she
has obtained at least 70% or more marks in the aggregate of all Semesters in the
University Examination and at least 70% or more marks in the aggregate of all
Semesters in Internal Examinations.
