Course description:
This weekly class is a seminar dedicated to legal English and it lasts 1:30. It is a language
class where you will be able to both improve your reading, listening and writing skills, and
learn about the history, the institutions and the political system of the United States.

Skills to learn/improve:
- give a presentation with few notes + make a Power Point (see booklet p. 5-8)
- write an opinion essay (see booklet p. 9-14)
- understand newspaper articles and radio reports (see booklet p. 97-99)
- debate (see booklet p. 100-103)
- learn specialized vocabulary (political and legal fields)

Rules of the class:


- English only
- no late arrivals (not more than 5 min)
- mandatory attendance and limited unjustified absences (you will be allowed 2)
- no food
- no cell phones or laptops, unless told otherwise
- respectful debates: raise your hand, listen to others

Tools:
- your booklet (to be brought to each class)
- the university’s online platform
- an English grammar book of your choice (see booklet for suggestions)

Evaluation:
- no final exam but continual assessment
- composition of the final grade:
50%: in-class exam in week 11 or 12
50%: work in class (participation, oral presentation, debates, additional papers or quizzes,
punctuality)

Oral presentation:
- comment on one or two cartoons from the booklet, in relation to the unit of the class
- you must send a list of the references that you used to the professor after your presentation
