For questions |-7, cheose the best answer (A, B or C) Presenter: In today’s show, tm delighted to be joined by Doctor Leonora Stockley, uthor ofthe new book Human Relationships and Communication inthe 2 Century. Doctor Stockley, weleome. Dr Stockley: Hell! Presenter: Now, you've been doing research into how technology affects human relationships. Could you tell us ‘more about why you chose to research this cond how you collected your data? Dr Stockley: Sure. Well this rose out of a discussion my colleagues and | were hving atthe university where | work. We dlready knew how we ourselves interact with our family and friends but | wanted to 00 how a wider somple of people reported their own beheviour so | sent out ‘ questionnaire to people within my own online networks. | asked them to consider how technology affects human relationships Presenter: And what did you find out from the responses tothe question Wos this what you were expecting? Dr Stockley: Wel, ntally, | thought Sei all saad ot hacen nes be fo shore information online which isn't ways foctuelly correc, but this wasn't tone of the issues people oised. One theme that emerged repeatedly was tha, sfilemany people have an iret connection thats good enough to connect with anyone onywhere inthe word, there are drawbacks. For instance, whenever someone's Using an internet enabled device, such as a phone or tablet, people in their immediate environment, ike colleagues or Friends, tend not to get their ful atetion Presenter: Well | think we've el experienced thal a some point In the book, you give on exomple from one of the people you surveyed, Fred. What does he find challenging when tolking 1 people online? Dr Stockley: Wel, Fred explained to ime that even when he's using some form of \ifen communication online with people he knows really well, and has a bond with, he finds i realy dificult to tel if someone is, you know, expressing admiration, despair or relief, whichis something | hink alot of people have trouble with Ws interesting, though, because he also insists that he doesn? have an issue with saying how he feels himself. Presenter: What do you think about humour in online communication? Dr Stockley: Well humour is enother very inferesiing area. The internet is 3 way to share things that have Enid us Ando couse, we can respond toa friend's amusing post with a positive comment. Actually, is always been known that sharing & laugh, | mean ‘actually hearing and seeing people laugh, does alot of good, in terms of lowering your blood pressure, and giving you @ general sonse of welrbeing, But wee fill writing to sei he same is rue when 0 person is siting ot their computer watching funny videos and reading humorous anicles Presenter: | see. You aso include an example from your interview with Shine. What opinions did you form comectatee Dr Stockley: Well, Josephine was 0 huge fan of social media. | didn collect enough data to know ifshe-con be described as having an addlction though. Bot is clear that conversations through social media con start io take the place of conversations in ral life, In Josephine's case, she was finding that she did't need to leave her home in order to communicate cov-19 2020 with people. So she didn. However, the longer she stayed at home, the more she missed the company of other people. This was very much my impression, from our discussions. And so thats the reason why she decided to cut down on how much she sed social media Presenter: Now these days, we hear 30 ‘much about people falling for someone they met enline, and real-life relationships failing as a result, Would you say that social media ebony bod hing for romantic relationships? Dr Stockley: I wouldn't go 50 far as to say that. The intemet offers us so much, but | know that forthe older generation ot least, the thought of people geting together and brecking up, all online, is @ very strange concept. What | would say is that if two people who not be in love fe! that there's cn issue in their relationship, ths needs sorting out by siting down together in person, rather than soy, finding the solution to their problem on the internet, which is what lot of people do nowadays. Presenter: And finally, con you summarise whot you fee! online communication is most useful for? Dr Stockley: Well | thnk its ideal for staying uptodate wih what people ore pte, you know, the people you're close fo, just maintaining the chanel of communication... though, | do think that it con all get very complicated when trying to organise some sort of meeting, such as «© doy out. And geting things done ~ especially when other people need to know what's expected of them, that can be tricky too, because some things, practical details often need to be checked ond confirmed. Presenter: Dr Stockley, thank you very much for talking o us. WRITING PART 1 Model answer Traditionally, files were not imited to ivst parents and children. People lived with ther members of thei forily, ineluding grandparents, aunts, uncles ond cousins. Many ofthese relatives shared responsibilty for rising the children, which some ore wos bench o everyone. ‘Although mony families no longer live in close proximity to their relations, having o strong connection between them is usally positive forall generations. Grandparents can help out with childcare, albeit occasionally, and forrily members can clfe financial support as needed. Cleary, spending time with the extended family brings benefits to old and young alike. Young parents may not value the advice oftheir elders, and sgrondporents now expect fo spend their refirement pursuing ther own interests rather than caring for their grandchildren Personally, I believe that parents are responsible for thei children, Other fori members may help but do not, in my view, have any cbligation to do so.
