Installation Instruction White Paper

Installation Instructions for Eclipse XPOL Direct Mount

The XPOL Direct Mount (XDM) supports direct mounting of two ODUs onto one antenna for co-channel dual polarized (CCDP)
operation.
• The XDM is installed onto an antenna, and the two ODUs, one for vertical, the other for horizontal, are
installed onto the XDM.
• The XDM requires an EDGE series antenna. These antennas have a circular waveguide feed-point, and no
ODU mounting collar - the XDM bolts directly onto the back of the antenna.
• The Edge series antennas are identified with a -113 part-number suffix (e.g. 086-150031-113 ECLIPSE EDGE
DIRECT MOUNT ANT, 14.25-15.35 GHZ, 0.3 M, HPLP).

XDM Kitset
The XDM is supplied as a kitset with a mount kit and an OMT (orthogonal mode transducer) element. The kitset part
number is 086-523343-0XX, where the last two digits indicate the frequency band in GHz.
The kitset comprises two boxed items:
Item Qty Description Part Number
1 1 Eclipse XDM Mount Kit 179-530071-001
2 1 OMT Element (The last two digits indicate the frequency band in GHz). 086-523324-0XX

The Eclipse XDM Mount Kit 179-530071-001comprises:

XDM Assembly and Installation Procedure

1. Check that the kitset part numbers are as-ordered. Ensure that the frequency
dependent OMT element is correct for the ODU frequency band.
2. Unpack the kitset and check
that items within the kitset are
undamaged, complete and correct.
3. Assemble the XDM from the OMT
element and mount plates using the
M5 pan head screws. Torque screws
to 4.5 Nm (3.5 ft.lbs).
4. Remove the protective tape on the
OMT element antenna port and fit the
correct-sized O-ring:
• Large for 6 GHz, within the groove
in the OMT element feedhead.
• Medium for 7/8 GHz, within the
groove in OMT element feedhead.
• Small for 10 to 38 GHz. Fit in the
groove around the antenna
waveguide feedhead.

5. Apply a thin smear of silicon grease

around the O-ring.
6. Carefully align the XDM assembly
onto the antenna waveguide
feedhead with the recessed side of
the OMT element facing down.
7. Fasten the XDM to the antenna
using the M8 bolts (qty 6). Torque
bolts to 20 Nm (15 ft.lbs).

Install the ODUs

8. The ODUs must be installed onto the
XDM so that the ODU handles are
vertically up, and the ODU cables
vertically down.
9. First remove all protective tape from
the ODU and OMT element
waveguide ports. Check that the port
assemblies and the O-ring are
undamaged, clean, and dry.
10.Apply a thin layer of silicon grease
around the ODU feed-head O-ring.
11.Fully loosen the nuts on the ODU
mounting bolts, insert through
receptor holes in the mount plate,
and rotate the ODU clockwise to
bring the bolts hard up against the
slot ends.
12.Carefully bring the ODU forward to
fully engage the ODU feedhead.
Finger-tighten the four nuts, checking
to ensure correct engagement of
ODU with mount plate.
13.Firmly tighten the four nuts with an
open-ended 19 mm (3/4”) spanner.
Torque to 35-40 Nm (26-30 ft.lbs).
NOTE:
Unused/vacant ODU ports on an XDM
must the blanked-off with a microwave
termination load. Termination loads are
available from Harris Stratex Networks
or your supplier.
Markings on the OMT
element indicate ODU
polarization:
• ODU A / Vertical
• ODU B / Horizontal
