Penned by the CEO
Radhika Gupta
MD & CEO, Edelweiss Asset Management
2021 was a rollercoaster ride. It started with optimism about the discovery of vaccines. Then the sentiment
changed as we found ourselves in the firm grip of the second wave of the pandemic. But the situation was not
completely gloomy. There was an incredible equity rally in which participation of retail investors became
pronounced. Now, there are imminent signs of a potential third wave of the pandemic. But this should not worry
us. Because we have lessons to learn and experiences to help us move on with any challenge in the coming
months. As we enter 2022 with considerable hope and faith, it is important that we focus on time-tested learnings
of 2021 which will stand in good stead for us. Here are the ten things that I will remember as I enter into 2022:
1. This was the year of Initial Public Offers (IPOs) and New Fund Offers (NFO). The total IPO collection crossed Rs 1.19
trillion – the highest ever in the history of India’s capital market. A few IPOs were rewarding and many were not; the
IPO market challenged our minds. New companies and business models listed, and questioned a thinking built on
"consistent compounder frameworks." The easiest thing to do was to make comparisons about how one food
delivery was worth more than all real estate and hotel companies and ignore the segment. We need an open but
honest approach to understanding how to value the new age business because more of them are coming our way.
2. April-May period of Covid 2.0 was a challenging time. As people grappled with health, they also dealt in a tough time
with the problems of not being able to access their money when they lost a loved one. A missing nominee,
incomplete paperwork, or one spouse knowing nothing about family finances when the other is suddenly gone can
be very expensive. Clear all your formalities and smoothen the flow of your income and assets to your near and dear
ones. Appoint nominees for every investment you have made. The best time to act is NOW.
3. Though social media is abuzz with the debate about active vs passive investing, let’s not ignore the fact that many
individuals are drawn to investing in cryptocurrencies. While they were chasing cryptocurrencies just because they
are ‘told by their friends, many including me pointed out to the lack of regulation of these assets. While investing in
stocks, mutual funds or even cryptocurrencies, the fear of missing out made many chase returns. The moot point to
remember however is to remain committed to personal goals and not to win some race of earning returns.
4. Investment advice is easily available and in many cases it is free. Though there are many personal finance
influencers, and a few of them are really good, you should be careful from whom to take advice from. Take advice
from the right people and pay for the advice. Not all free advice is good.
5. A family friend today sits on a large corpus, thanks to the decade long compounding he enjoyed on a bluechip share
gifted to him when he was leaving for the US. Investing is all about compounding. However, we live in times of 10-
minute delivery – where we look forward to instant solutions. After a year of quick returns, many investors started
expecting returns in the short-term. However, equity investing is all about the long-term. At this time and at current
high prices, one needs to have a longer investment timeframe.
6. Many themes are marketed as time-bound opportunity, especially IPOs and NFOs which sold many exotic themes.
In a rush, some investors loaded on to them, leading to portfolios of 50 to 70 schemes which looked like buying the
entire market. But most individuals forget that many restaurants are opened and we need not rush to eat
everywhere. No opportunity asks for immediate action, especially when you do not understand it. Saying No is not a
bad option, as most opportunities in markets do not disappear immediately.
7. When it comes to food, I came across a surprise. While tasting a 15 course-meal, I enjoyed Khichadi – dal and rice
the most. Though it was old school, it was smartly made with new toppings. While all the new global, thematic
investment ideas attract a lot of investors’ attention, let us not forget our core portfolios – made up of diversified
equity funds.

Penned by the CEO
8. Since the Covid 2.0 and the subsequent lockdown, we have seen the life coming back to normalcy. But then there
emerged omicron variant and we again experienced another cycle going down. Living with a sense of balance helps
in cycles. Many investors who were riding the upward movement in their investments were dejected when they saw
just a 10% correction in the recent past. We need to learn to live in cycles without losing our balance. For that we
need to ignore noise.
9. The best of the investments do not come in the form of stocks or mutual funds. One may argue about pricing of
IPOs, but it is inspiring to see how Indian entrepreneurs from often humble backgrounds are building great
companies and creating great personal wealth. Nykaa gave us a female billionaire. This shows us that your talent is
your biggest asset. Use that to build wealth.
10. The greatest of all wealth is to enjoy your time and relationships. I have seen my parents enjoying their money, time
and relationships at the age of 70. It informs us that when invested wisely, money enables peaceful life. The
pandemic has further reinforced the fact that life is much more than money. Save it, invest it, but don't forget to
enjoy it.

Market Insights
Trideep Bhattacharya
CIO - Equity, Edelweiss Asset Management Limited
The human population has reconciled to live with corona virus in last two & half years. With financial markets in the
view, normalization is on the cards and is expected to happen from 2022. The year will be a tale of two halves;
1HY22 like to see volatility as markets continue to react to global monetary policies on one hand and omicron on the
other. 2HY22 should see markets normalizing and continuing their earnings driven journey.
History of the financial markets in last 30 years depicts instances that whenever there has been an economic recovery,
the early stages of interest rate rise has been positive for equity markets. Hence, signs of rate increase are expected to
not de-rail the equity rally especially if it's done in more calibrated manner.
With respect to Omicron Virus issue, we're experiencing third phase of the COVID story. In the first wave the markets
halved, in the second we saw 10-15% of correction. Finally, as we gear up to digest the third wave, markets are likely to be
lot more equanimous, as the vaccinated population is high and we are well aware of the spreading pattern of the virus.
The Indian economy's K-shaped recovery has been apparent to us for a while now. In fact, at Edelweiss, we as fund
managers are focused on portfolios which include companies which are leaders in segments, companies with pricing
power and market share gainers in their respective sectors. Also, k-shaped recovery is driven by consolidation in Indian
business environment driven by reform measures like demonetization, GST reforms, labour reforms etc. over last few
years.
In 2022, time to play the macro laggards is behind us. We think it's time to focus on good stock selection, rather than
analysing macro trends. In other words, in the next 12 – 18 months, market movements will be stock specific and
centered around earnings upgrades rather macro-trends. In-short a bottom up stock selection will work wonders.
Based on our studies of economic expansion and earnings, the themes that we are bullish include private sector
consumption demand, capex & China + 1.
Having said the positive things, there are also few factors which can affect the markets negatively, viz. the rise of interest
rates out of sync with earnings, the pace of normalization matters and if it's too early and fast that could de-rail the equity
markets. Second is inflation should be transient. If it turns out stickier than it may turn out stagflation. The third will be the
oil prices and if they continue to rise and bring about recession which it did in the past.
Lastly, the recent geo-political situation needs to be watched carefully as well. In last 20 years, we're used to a globalized
world, thus keeping a check on cost of capital. However, recent happenings in Russia and Afghanistan, the rise of global
fundamentalism needs to restrict as it may affect global trade and cause flutters in equity markets.

Investing made simple
Mutual Fund is one of the best platforms for investors, but the real problem lies in selecting an appropriate fund. MFs provide solution for all type of investors
either looking for long term wealth creation or looking for a short term investment solution with lower risk. Although investing without right advice is never
recommended but let's learn the basics of choosing an appropriate suitable fund.
5. Active Bets
Active Bets means percentage of allocation which is away from the Benchmark. Higher Active bet means that the higher conviction of the fund manager which helps
in generating better returns compared to the Benchmark.
5. Asset Allocation
One should check that the overall asset allocation of the fund is in line with the investment objective or not i.e. it should be true to label. Also, check the cash level of the

HOW TO READ A FACTSHEET
Fund Manager : An employee of the asset management company such as a mutual fund or life insurer, who manages investments of the scheme.
He is usually part of a larger team of fund managers and research analysts.
Application Amount for Fresh Subscription : This is the minimum investment amount for a new investor in a mutual fund scheme.
Minimum Additional Amount : This is the minimum investment amount for an existing investor in a mutual fund scheme.
Yield to Maturity : The Yield to Maturity or the YTM is the rate of return anticipated on a bond if held until maturity. YTM is expressed as an annual
rate. The YTM factors in the bond's current market price, par value, coupon interest rate and time to maturity.
SIP : SIP or systematic investment plan works on the principle of making periodic investments of a fixed sum. It works similar to a recurring bank
deposit. For instance, an investor may opt for an SIP that invests Rs 500 every 15th of the month in an equity fund for a period of three years.
NAV : The NAV or the net asset value is the total asset value per unit of the mutual fund after deducting all related and permissible expenses. The
NAV is calculated at the end of every business day. It is the value at which the investor enters or exits the mutual fund.
Benchmark : A group of securities, usually a market index, whose performance is used as a standard or benchmark to measure investment
performance of mutual funds, among other investments. Some typical benchmarks include the Nifty, Sensex, BSE200, BSE500, 10-Year Gsec.
Entry Load : A mutual fund may have a sales charge or load at the time of entry and/or exit to compensate the distributor/agent. Entry load is
charged at the time an investor purchases the units of a mutual fund. The entry load is added to the prevailing NAV at the time of investment.
For instance, if the NAV is Rs. 100 and the entry load is 1%, the investor will enter the fund at Rs 101.
Note: SEBI, vide circular dated June 30, 2009 has abolished entry load and mandated that the upfront commission to distributors will be paid by
the investor directly to the distributor, based on his assessment of various factors including the service rendered by the distributor
Exit Load : Exit load is charged at the time an investor redeems the units of a mutual fund. The exit load is deducted from the prevailing NAV at the
time of redemption. For instance, if the NAV is Rs 100 and the exit load is 1%, the redemption price would be Rs 99 Per Unit.
Modified Duration : Modified duration is the price sensitivity and the percentage change in price for a unit change in yield
Standard Deviation : Standard deviation is a statistical measure of the range of an investment's performance. When a mutual fund has a high
standard deviation, its means its range of performance is wide, implying greater volatility.
Sharpe Ratio : The Sharpe Ratio, named after its founder, the Nobel Laureate William Sharpe, is a measure of risk-adjusted returns. It is calculated
using standard deviation and excess return to determine reward per unit of risk.
Beta : Beta is a measure of an investment's volatility vis-à-vis the market. Beta of less than 1 means that the security will be less volatile than the
market. A beta of greater than 1 implies that the security's price will be more volatile than the market.
AUM : AUM or assets under management refers to the recent / updated cumulative market value of investments managed by a mutual fund
or any investment firm.
Holdings : The holdings or the portfolio is a mutual fund's latest or updated reported statement of investments/securities. These are usually
displayed in terms of percentage to net assets or the rupee value or both. The objective is to give investors an idea of where their money is
being invested by the fund manager.
Nature of Scheme : The investment objective and underlying investments determine the nature of the mutual fund scheme. For instance, a mutual
fund that aims at generating capital appreciation by investing in stock markets is an equity fund or growth fund.Likewise, a mutual fund that aims
at capital preservation by investing in debt markets is a debt fund or income fund. Each of these categories may have subcategories.
Rating Profile : Mutual funds invest in securities after evaluating their creditworthiness as disclosed by the ratings. A depiction of the mutual fund
in various investments based on their ratings becomes the rating profile of the fund. Typically, this is a feature of debt funds.
Potential Risk Class : A Potential Risk Class matrix consists of parameters based on maximum interest rate risk (measured by Macaulay Duration
(MD) of the scheme) and maximum credit risk (measured by Credit Risk Value (CRV) of the scheme).
