In this assignment, you will create a speculative design that chooses 2
concept, design idea, problem, or ideal in the present and extends it
into a utopie, dystopic, or simply atopic future. In doing so, you can
choose your own current concept, ideally related to your future career
(teacher's pay, Facebook tracking, urban farming, advancements In
food.technology, etc.) Remember that we'll be extending this topic into
a grant in the next project, so choose wisely.
1. Start with a well-researched and quoted/cited problem/idea
narrative in the present. Essentially, make a short argument about
what the problem/idea is and why it's important to address. What is
the problem/trend? Why? How? For whom? Remember: Point +
Evidence + Analysis. Research is a must here, including at least 4
strong sources (a mix of academic and journalistic is ok but not sloppy
blogs or wikipedia). Follow our reading and discussion/powerpoint on
statements of need as your guide. (2 pages single-spaced + a works
cited)
2. Expand the problem or ideal into the future-what do you speculate
happening in 10, 20, 100 years?
3. Createla brief story about an everyday interaction with youndesign
This story must have: a network of subtle speculations and lessons
(provoked not told), hints of a future world beyond your design, more
than one character, dialog, unforeseen complications around your
design. Consider: How is the everyday world changed for this person?
Focus on the culture that might develop around your design, the laws
that support it, the ways people resist it, the ways it affects society
generally. Get into minutiae. Take into account the lessons we've
learned along the way about good speculative writing.(~3-4 pages
single-spaced, formatted professionally)
4. Conclude with a 1/2-page artist's statement that describes why you
wrote the story in the way you did.
5.Create an excellent coverpage in canva for the piece.
