EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE IN THE LEARNING PROCESS

“As much as 80% of adult ‘success’ comes from emotional intelligence.”

– Daniel Goleman (Author; Emotional Intelligence)

As studies have shown how having a high emotional intelligence impacts our lives
and pushes us to excel in our pursuits, emotional intelligence as a concept has
become an ideology that is appreciated globally.
Emotional intelligence is the ability to know your emotions and to be able to
control and show them effectively in goodwill/friendliness while interacting with
other people. It is easy to see how emotional intelligence becomes applicable in
the learning process, as it affects both the teachers and the students.
As students, our ability to understand what we have learned and put them into
action for the best results depends a lot on our perspectives and tolerance – and
other concepts associated with emotional intelligence. Therefore, every student
should develop their interpersonal and soft skills before, during and after the
period they are engaged in a learning process.
There are five important components of Emotional Intelligence.
1. Self-awareness
This refers to one’s ability to distinguish their emotions and build confidence that
makes them believe in themselves and their ability to understand what they are
learning. By doing this, you will know your strengths and weaknesses as a student.
2. Emotional Control
Individuals who can put their emotions under control rarely attack, criticize or put
the blame on others – both on their schoolmates and teachers. Instead, they can
listen to themselves, and get a more transparent understanding of people's
emotions, even in non-verbal communication.
3. Self-motivation
Self-motivated students are relentless in their pursuit of academic excellence; they
have more passion for learning and impacting others positively.
4. Empathy
A learning environment that is not friendly, due to the behavior of the instructors
and students, will surely be less welcoming. It will feel less like a progressive
community, and the effects will be noticeable in the performance of students, and
a drop in the efforts made by teachers. When all the participants of a learning
process understand, accept, and try to share in the feelings of each other, an
overwhelming sense of community is felt by everyone. Thus, learning processes
become more progressive and impactful.
5. Relationship/Social Skills
Even outside an academic environment, great relationship skills are fundamental
for the social growth of individuals. While your intellect will get you the good
grades, excellent social skills will ensure that people genuinely share in your
happiness while celebrating with you.
Generally speaking, if everyone can handle his/her emotional intelligence
better, the learning process will become a healthier, more fulfilling and successful
activity for everyone.
