THESIS

Schools have been forced to censor the spaces offered to their students for free expression,
such as student newspaper in which students exponentially improve their writing and reading
skills; however, this text will attempt to establish the role of the school when its members are
under a media threatening provoked by the mismanagement of its newspaper staff.

1 Main idea

Topic Sentence Schools should be allowed to censor student newspaper for the good of
the entire educational community.

Example 1 For instance, student newspaper might violate a state rule about that it
said prevented publications at public schools from featuring obscenity,
defamation and incitement.

Example 2 Since 1988, when the Supreme Court ruled that a Missouri school
district had acted lawfully in removing a two-page spread on divorce
and teenage pregnancy from a student newspaper.

Reason It is the school's duty to protect the integrity and reputation of students
and the school itself when those are threatened.

Summary Therefore, the school must make decisions always taking as a reference
the care and protection of the educational population.

1 Supporting idea
Topic sentence Student newspaper has led the way to become a place for gossip and a
space to expose the private lives of others in which their reputation has
been tainted and their integrity and privacy has been violated.

Example 1 “We had five anonymous stories featuring personal experiences of

students from diverse backgrounds and diverse relationships and sexual
experiences,” said Olivia Fu, 18, formerly a co-editor in chief of student
newspaper "The Express".

Reason Due to mismanagement of student newspaper in which the private lives

of students and teachers has been involved.

Supporting Consequently, in Herriman, Utah, an enterprising school publication ran

point 1 into trouble after digging into a subject that administrators at Herriman
High School had tried to keep secret: the reason for the dismissal of a
popular history teacher.

Supporting Fourteen states have laws in place meant to safeguard school

point 2 publications from interference.

2 Supporting idea
Topic sentence The immediate action of the school is necessary because it is the
school’s duty to protect the physical, emotional and moral integrity of
students.

Example 1 For example, in Orange County, Calif., a principal sanctioned a school

publication for a special issue that focused on teenage relationships,
calling it “disrespectful and sensationalistic.”

Example 2 In Colombia, Law 1098 of 2006 called the Childhood and Adolescence
Law in its article 7 establishes the integral protection of children and
adolescents.

Reason The duty of care is also a permanent responsibility, both in the

execution of ordinary activities (educational, academic, recreational and
sports), as well as in extraordinary or emergency situations that may
arise and to which students may be exposed.

Summary They are recognized as subjects of rights, including the guarantee and
fulfillment of the same, the prevention of their threat or violation and
the security of their immediate restoration.
2 Main idea

Topic sentence Schools must have good administration to prevent harassment from the
student newspaper.

Example 1 Since, administrators have been able to censor work in school

publications that they consider poorly written or “inconsistent with the
shared values of a civilized social order.”

Example 2 For instance, the publication’s faculty adviser, Bill Kaiser, was put on
paid leave. Out of concern for him, the students briefly took down the
articles.

Reason In order to establish procedures, processes and actions, in their ordinary

and extraordinary actions, always conducive to guaranteeing students
physical, emotional and moral integrity.

Summary On the whole, it is a call to attention to the civil responsibility of the

school to review the administrative procedures that could generate
possible damages in the school community.
1 Supporting idea

Topic sentence A good administration ensures the proper, professional and careful
exercise of all actions and training activities that are undertaken in the
institution.

Example 1 In this sense, they must effectively protect children and adolescents
against all forms of abuse, physical or psychological aggression,
humiliation, discrimination or ridicule on the part of other classmates
and teachers.

Example 2 In Colombia, Law 115 of 1994 called the General Education Law in
its article 5 establishes the purposes of education.

Reason Since education must be developed according to the corresponding

purposes established by law.

Summary To sum up, the administration cannot put the human rights and values
of students at risk under any circumstances.
2 Supporting idea

Topic sentence The student newspaper is directly related to the students.

Example 1 Undoubtedly the presence of students is there taking part both in the
development and creation and in the reception of the newspaper and
fulfilling the role of readers of the same.

Example 2 Moreover, students should respect the rights of people involved in the
news and articles, observe the common standards of decency and stand
accountable to the public for the fairness and accuracy of their reports
and information.

Reason Because of the objective is to encourage free expression and promote

reading and writing in the educational community and at the same time
to inform about different facts and events that happen in the
establishment.

Summary All in all, it is of vital importance that a professional person is in charge

of it and established a regulation which contains the topics that are
suitable and pertinent to be published and those that are not as well.
