Steam Generator
I T
MN
• Steam generator is the equipment used for producing steam
@
– Popularly known as boiler
r a
• Suitable heat source supplies heat to water, stored in a drum,
r o
to convert it into steam at desired pressure & temperature
A
• It is a combination of apparatus meant for producing, furnishing
i t
or recovering heat, together with the apparatus for transferring
that heat to the fluid desired to be heated and vapourized
A
• Applications !
m ASME
r
1. Power generation
D
– Mechanical work or electric power is generated by expanding
steam in the steam engine or steam turbine
I T
2. Winter air conditioning and Water heating
N
– Residential or industrial air conditioning in cold weather
M
– Hot water supply for domestic or industrial use
@
3. Industrial processing
r a
– Textile industry
o
– Sugar industry
– Chemical industry
A r
i t
4. Cooking
m
5. Sterilization
A
– High pressure steam is used in microbiology laboratories and
r
similar environments for sterilization
D
6. Agricultural
– Soil sterilization aimed at enhancing soil health
Boiler Terminology
I T
MN
• Boiler shell contains the water & steam at working pressure
@
– Its capacity should be sufficient to meet the steam requirement
r a
• Combustion chamber is the space meant for burning the fuel
r o
– Generally located below the boiler shell
A
• Grate is the platform, in combustion chamber,
i t
upon which fuel is kept while it burns
m
• Furnace is the space b/w grate & boiler shell
A
– Also known as fire box
D r
• Heating surface is that part of boiler which is
exposed to fire flames or hot gases
• Mountings and accessories !
Simple Vertical Boiler
I T
• Salient features of the boiler
MN
@
– Vertical, internally fired
a
– Shell type, mobile boiler
– Low pressure (< 10 bar)
o r
– Natural water circulation
A r
i t
– Single-pass flue gas passage
m
• Flue gas path is vertically up
A
• Application !
r
– Mobile applications viz. steam
D
rollers, pile drivers, steam
shovels, portable hoisting rigs

Babcock & Wilcox boiler
I T
• Salient features of boiler
MN
@
– Horizontally aligned drum
a
– Externally fired
o r
– Water-tube type
r
– Stationary boiler
A
– Low pressure (< 18 bar)
i t
– Multi tube type
m
– Natural water circulation
A
– Multi-pass flue gas passage
r
• Flue gas path !
D
• Application !
– Thermal power plants
• Merits
I T
N
– Better steam generation rate
M
– Reasonable initial and maintenance cost
@
– Superheated steam
r a
– Natural water circulation
r o
i t A
A m
r
• Demerits
D
– Low working pressure
– Medium steam generation rate
Water tube Vs Fire tube
I T
MN
• Water inside the tubes, and gases • Hot gases inside the tubes, and
on the outer side water on the outer side
@
• Higher steam generation rate • Low steam generation rate
• For large capacity applications
r a
• For small capacity applications
r o
• High working pressure (≤250 bar) • Low working pressure (≤25 bar)
A
• High overall efficiency (upto 90%) • Lower overall efficiency (<75%)
i t
• Low floor area requirement • Higher floor area requirement
m
• Ease of dismantling, hence • Large shell size makes
A
transportation transportation cumbersome
r
• Accommodates fluctuating loads • Unsuitable for fluctuating loads
D
• Simpler & cheaper construction
due to small shell size
• Cumbersome & costly
construction due to large shell
Mountings & Accessories
I T
MN
• Various boiler components can be grouped into two categories
@
– Boiler mountings
a
– Boiler Accessories
• Boiler mountings
o r
A r
– They are the components fitted mainly to ensure safety of
i t
the boiler and to control of the process of steam generation
m
– Accordingly they form an integral part of the boiler body
A
• Boiler accessories
D r
– They are the components fitted to enhance the efficiency of
the steam power plant
