Worksheet #4 (February 24, 2022)

Lecturer: Mohsen Aghaeiboorkheili Topic: Partial Differentiation

In this worksheet, there will be some problems related to partial differentiation topic that already
discussed in the week 3 of the class. Students are encouraged to practice and solve these problems in
term of improving their ability in this topic. This worksheet will not be evaluated and it is just for
acquaintance of students with future quizzes. If you have any question regarding this worksheet, just
come to my room in the M CS221B.

Problem 1
∂f
Calculate ∂x for the function

f (x, y, z) = 2x2 − 4x2 y + 2y 2 + 5xz 2 − 6x + 3z − 8,

∂f ∂f
Then, find ∂y and ∂z by setting the other two variables constant and differentiating accordingly.
Solution

Problem 2
Calculate the three partial derivatives of the following function:

g(x, y, z) = x2 y − 4xz + y 2 x − 3yz.

Solution

Problem 3
∂f ∂f ∂f
Calculate ∂x , ∂y and ∂z for the function

f (x, y, z) = sec(x2 y) − tan(x3 yz 2 ).

Solution

Problem 4
Calculate all four second partial derivatives for the function

f (x, y) = sin(3x − 2y) + cos(x + 4y).

at point (1, −1). Use ∆x = 0.03 and ∆y = −0.02. What is the exact value of ∆z?
Solution

Problem 8
