To reach the place, people need to go
down a stairway of 350 steps. It leads
from the side of the highway to a place on
the Ciwulan River. The village is located
on a hillside near the river.
The population of the village keeps on
dwindling. This means that the number of
people is gradually getting smaller and

find jobs in other places like Tasikmalaya,
Bandung, Bogor, and Jakarta.
The "Kuncen" or village elder, Darodji,

Most of the Kampung Naga villagers

Pamali is the 'small' taboos. For

DEWARUCI’S WORLD VOYAGE
In 1964 the Indonesian government sent
KRI Dewaruci on a 48,000 kilometers voyage
around the world. The ship was just a small
training vessel, which used both sails and an

engine. It has sixteen sails on its three tall
masts, and at the front a statue of the sea god,
Dewaruci. For Dewaruci, the voyage was its fifth
training voyage, and it was the longest and the
most dangerous one.
There were forty cadets of the "Akademi
Angkatan Laut Indonesia" on board, besides
the regular crew of sixty-two men. This voyage
was part of the cadets' training but it also had
other more important purposes. One purpose
was to prove to all Indonesians that we are still
as much as a loving nation as we used to be
hundreds of years ago. The nation's love for the
sea must never die. Another was to prove to the
world that we live up to our motto "Jalesveva
Jayamahe", which means that sea we are
victorious". And finally, the visits to other
countries would help to improve
understanding with other nations.
On March 8, Dewaruci began its round the
world voyage. According to their plan, the
captain had to take the following course, the
Strait of Malacca, the Indian Ocean, the Gulf
of Aden, the Red Sea, the Suez Canal, the
Mediterranean Sea, the Strait of Gibraltar, the
Panama Canal, the Pacific Ocean, and back to
Indonesia. During its long and sometimes
lonely journey, the ship stopped at some
harbors for both repairs and supplies. This
gave time to the crew and cadets to visit many
interesting places such as the pyramids in
Egypt, the beautiful island, Bermuda in the
Atlantic, the famous Disneyland, Hawaii and
many other places.
