WARMING UP THE UNIT To protect the equipment contained in your DIAPULSE unit, provision has been made for ¢ warm-up period which is automatically con- trolted. after piugging the unit into electric outiet Push standby button on the control panel to the Standby position until standby button lights, in dicating that the unit is ready for operation, This procedure requires approximately 60 seconds for the machine to become pre-heated and ready for the application of the high voltage current. HL TUNING STEPS a. With the unit in the standby position, the patient is placed so as to permit the treatment head to be brought into position es described above, b. With the treatment head properly placed, the ON button should be depressed, c. The unit MUST be tuned to the area being treated. This is accomplished by turning the bake- lite knob located on the periphery of the treatment head until maximum brilliarice is attained in the adjacent head tuning light, (much like tuning a radio or television), Note: d. The electromagnetic field emitted by the DIAPULSE treatment head is approximately 6 inches in diameter and penetrates to a depth of 6 to 8” at maximum setting. ‘CAUTION: Consult accompanying Physician's Etochure for “Instructions For Use" before using Diapulse. PHYSICIAN’S BROCHURE designed for safety Diapu Sse Diapulse, Pulsed High Peak Power Electromagnetic Energy (@Ragrtered Tredmack Eseme TION Diapulse consists of an electronic console and treatment heat. With the use of highly sophisticated electronics and circuttry Diapulse provides a wide range of pulsed high peak powsr elociromagnetic energy. The electromagnetic pulsations Provide deep penetration to the wound site or source of pain without any significant rise in tissue temperature. Diaputse is indicated for adjunctive use in the palliative troatreant of postoperative edema and pain in superficial softtissue. I isnot indicated as a substitute for conventional therapy for edema and pain, nor Is it indicated for trealment of deep tissues such asinternal organs. It can be used over any area of the bedy, with no danger of hyperpyrexia or acute tissue damage, It can be applied through clothing, and surgical dressings. WARNING Diapulse should not be used on patients using electronic cardiac pacemakersor of application. PRECAUTION 1. Diapulse should not be used in pregnant or skeletally immature patients, 2. The long term biologic effect of pulsed electromagnetic anergy is not known at this time. patients with metallic implants inthe area CAUTION “Federal law restricts this device to sale by oF on the order ata licensed health care practitioner.” GENERAL PRINCIPLES OF USE Diapulse produces an electromagnetic field from a shortwave generator operaling on an assigned frequency of 27.12 MHz, Under license from the Federal Communications Commissicer ‘The energy is pulsed in six steps from 80 to 600 times per second, Peak power is available in six steps trom 2980 975 peak watts. All pulses are 66 microseconds duration. The average cower output ranges from 1% to 38 watts. Beceuse the duration of each pulse is constant, the intensity of total power empicyed can be varied over a broad spectrum by correlating the settings for pulse frequency with the settings for peak power output The following Pulse Interval Char ilustrates the {unctien of the Pulse Frequency settings: PULSE INTERVAL CHART FH EHS ats iB RL GR | Jeers MILLISECONDS The following Power Setting Chart illustrates the function of the Power Seltings and the correlation of those settings with the Pulse Frequency. Frequency of use will necessarily vary, depending on other considerations for patient welfare and comfort. (Minimurn recommended use is 1 10 2 times per day.) (€) The location of the pain or edema is of particular importance in determining the frequency of use of Diapulse and the Pulse and power settings to be employed. Large body parts require higher settings. (2) Tho combination of pulse and power settings determine the amount of energy that will be applied to a selected area in any given time interval. When the condition being treated is of aless sensitive character, itis recommended that the pulse rate be 500 or 600 n order that in a given interval, maximum energy may be applied to the affected area toaccomplish the sired result. When the treated area sof a more sensitive character, itis eacommended that the pulse rate be 300 or 400, Where the involved tissue is of a considerable mass, itis recommended that the power setting be advanced to 5 or 6 peak ower in order to apply a sufficient amount of energy to penetrate the tissue involved. ‘Where the alfected area is smaller, i is suggested that the power setting be reduced to 4 Note: Because of the inherent safety of Diapulse, the physician enjoys very broad latitude in making clinical judgements with respect to the optimal use of Diapulse for a patient’ individual circumstance. Jn positioning the treatment head, there are certain invariable factors to be considered: {i) The energy produced by Diapulse obeys many of the rules of light and traverses from the treatment head in a “line of sight” manner. (i) Theenergy beam is dissipated to some degra n ar. For this reason, the treatment head should be placedin contact or 4s close a8 possible, with the wound sito or source of pain to be treated (il) Thephysician should determine the focal point to be treated, then the center of the treatment head should be “focused! directly over the principal site of troatment
