To check and set VREF:

It's a good idea to check VREF on all stepper drivers before using them. They are
not set by the manufacturer because the correct setting is different for each motor
type. The machine vendors should set it correctly, but often do not.

You calibrate the current to the stepper by adjusting VREF on the DRV8825. There is
a tiny silver potentiometer on the board. Touch the + multimeter probe the pot and
the - lead to ground. The value read is the VREF. The simplest way to do the
adjustment is to attach the + lead from the multimeter to a small screwdriver so
you can see the effect in real time.

The formula for the correct VREF on the DRV8825 current limit of the motor divided
by 2. The description on Amazon says the stepper maximum current is 1.3A. Divide by
2 is 0.65 volts. Turn the pot until the multimeter reads 0.65 volts or a bit lower
and you are set.

If the current is too high, the driver and motor can overheat and damage either or
both. If it's too low, the motor can skip steps.
