WORKSHEET: 1D Motion

Problem Solving. Show your complete solution.

1. A typical jet liner lands at a speed of 100 m/s (about 224 mi/h). While braking, it has an acceleration of –
5.2m/s2. (a) How long does it take to come to a stop? (b) What is the minimum length of the landing
strip under these conditions?

2. A driver traveling at night on a country road suddenly sees another car pull out into the roadway in front
of him. He slams on his brakes and skids for a distance of 72.9 m until he hits the other car. If the driver
slowed with constant acceleration of 4.8m/s 2 for 4.5 s, with what speed would he hit the other car?
3. A ball is thrown vertically upward with a speed of 25.0 m/s. (a) How high does it rise? (b)How long does
it take to reach its highest point? (c) How long does the ball take to hit the ground after it reaches its
highest point? (d) What is its velocity when it returns to the level from which it started?

4. The leaning tower of Pisa is 54.5 m tall. Supposedly Galileo investigated the behavior of falling objects by
dropping them from the top of this tower and timing their descent. How long would it take an object to
fall 54.5 m if air effects are negligible?
