The two videos of hurt give two different views on the same topic. They want you to
understand the importance between good and bad mistakes, regret, and why you should deal with
your problems. Even though it is the same song, the techniques used between the two videos are
different. With this, it gives you two viewpoints to interpret the messages.
The Nine Inch Nails version was the first to come out in 1994. The video showed a lot of
dying animals, soldiers, and destruction of towns. There was not too much jot within the video. It
was kind of dark and disrupted. Even though the viewer was seeing a negative view, it was still
Johnny Cash’s version came a little bit later in 2002. Although coming in later, it still had
some similarities. The video had the old man going through his past experiences. Multiple
flashbacks to his past showed the person he used to be. Then it cuts to who he is now. An older
person who looks like he is one one of his last days. He looks sad and does not have much
energy. This video is also somewhat darkening and connects to you similarly as Nine Inch Nails
Although the videos might have had similar messages to give, their approaches were
different. The story from Nine Inch Nails comes from a guy around 20-30 years old. He is trying

to tell you the bad results of your actions can leave you full of regret. The video portrays this
message by showing the war clips. It shows you that there are a lot of negative things that come
with war. There are always better options. It shows the regret of the actions taken through the
Johnny Cash also shows the results of regret through his video too. The old man looks
very sad and depressed. He sings about the pain he has and how he wished he could have done
things differently. This shows the regret of not changing your life while you had the opportunity
Both videos target a younger age group. I believe that it is trying to inform people to take
risks and not live with regret before you create it for yourself. To not make bad decisions and
have them follow you for the rest of your life. Through both videos this message is persistent,
just told in different ways. There is no targeted social class or race or religion. This is targeted
towards anyone that can take in the information and learn from others mistakes before they
repeat it themselves.
Both videos compare well to each other. Both are trying to get their message across. Even
though they were made at different times, they successfully do this. One is from an older person
looking back at who he used to be, and the other is looking at the current situation of the world
and describing how we can be better. Overall both get their point spread very well.
