On Discourse Ethics
Update the “Brochure on Ethical Theories and Its Applications”

Guide Questions:

What is discourse ethics?

Haberman’s discourse ethics follows the principle of universalization; however in discourse ethics, “
we must submit maxim to all others for a purpose of discursive testing its claim to universality.” In
other words, for us to know or to test the principle of universality, we have to say it in order for the
others to inspect or criticize to come up with the idea that this is a universal principle. The
universality should be agreed upon by the others. As what sir Loquias said in his presentation in
discourse ethics, discourse ethics tells us “How to come up with what we are supposed to do.”

What are its principles?

Principle of discourse ethics says that “only those norms can claim to be valid that meet with the
approval of all affected in their capacity as participants in a practical discourse.” Meaning, we need
to have a real-life argument where we can also accept the claim that it is universal if and only if it
goes through the process of discourse or a discussion.
