Bisclavret lines 29-63

29. One time he was found

a. Was found: was dwelling (had returned, was at home)

30. At his house, joyous and happy;

31. She inquired and questioned him.

32. “Lord,” she said, “beautiful, sweet beloved,

33. I would like to ask you one thing,

34. Very much, if I might dare:

35. But so do I fear your anger

36. As much as I fear nothing else.”

37. When he heard this, he so embraced her.

38. He brought her close to him, he so kissed her.

39. “Lady,” he said, “ask now!

40. Seek this thing no longer,

41. If I know it, I will tell it to you.”

42. “By faith,” she said, “I’m now protected!

a. Protected: saved (from the threat of death which she is about to describe)

43. Lord, I am in such disturbance

44. The days when you leave me.

45. I have very great distress in my heart because of it

46. And such fear of losing you,

47. If I do not have immediate comfort,

48. I may soon have death because of it.

49. Tell me, therefore, where you go,

50. Where you are and spend your time!

51. It is my thinking that you are having an affair,

a. Having an affair: that you are IN LOVE

52. And if this is so, you are making a mistake!”

53. “Lady,” he said, “in the name of God, have mercy!

54. Misfortune will come to me, if I tell you it;

55. For I will chase your love away from me

a. Your love away from me: that I will chase you away from my love

56. And I will lose myself because of it.”

57. When the lady heard this,

58. She did not think lightly about it.

59. She asked him a following time.

a. A following time: many times (subsequent times)

60. So did she encourage and flatter him

61. That he told her the situation;

a. Aventure (situation) begins as neutral in Old French, then begins to take on the

“adventurous” over time (sort of at the middle at this exact point)

62. Nothing did he conceal from her.

63. “Lady, I become a werewolf.”

a. Werewolf: Bisclavret

i. Try to leave “bisclavret” as such: leave it up to the reader’s interp.
