1. Two 200 involute spur gears have a module 10mm.The addendum is one module.

The
larger gear has 50 teeth and the pinion 13 teeth. Does the interference occur? If it occurs,
to what value should the pressure angle be changed to eliminate interference?
2. Two 3mm module 200 pressure angle spur gear mesh externally to give gear ratio of 4.
The addendum is 1.2 times the module. The pinion rotates at 150 rpm. Determine: (i) The
minimum number of teeth on each gear wheel to avoid interference and (ii) the number of
pairs of teeth in contact.
Helical / Spiral Gears
• A helical gear is similar to a spur gear except that the teeth of a
helical gear are cut at an angle (known as the helix angle) to the
axis (or hole).
• Helical gears are made in both right and left hand
configurations.
• Helical gears used on non-parallel shafts must have the same
normal pitch and normal pressure angles.

The helical gears are successfully

applied in various industries such as
cement plants, sugar mills, thermal
power, mining industry, earth
moving equipments, machine tools,
cranes etc.
Helical gears will be prepared with teeth of both type of hand i.e. Right hand teeth and
left hand teeth.
Following figure shows the spur gear, helical gear of left hand teeth and right hand
teeth.

If the thumb of our left hand is following the inclination of tooth of gear, that helical
will be termed as left hand helical gear.

If the thumb of our right hand is following the inclination of tooth of gear, that helical
will be termed as right hand helical gear.
