Case Study: Royal Hotel 1

Troubleshooting Information Systems at the Royal Hotel

1. Despite having relatively little specific information about why the system failed,

what do you think are the main reason for such failure?

In my perspective, there are some important reasons behind the failure observed in the

case of Royal Hotel. Firstly, the major reason behind its failure is the fact that the person

who started the project and ended it were completely different. Even though, Blake gave

all his view points towards the project to Jack, it still wasn’t sufficient as there will still

be some contradiction in the vision. I also believe that Jack wasn’t an appropriate person

to carry out the task as he clearly wasn’t good at implementation.

2. How could you fix these problems?

I believe providing an adequate training would have solved the problem to a greater

extent. One of the ideas that the management could come up with is spreading awareness

about the new software so to provide them enough time to adapt to it and be use to it. I

would also make sure that the employees are enough committed to make the project

successful and most importantly unlike Blake I would have interviewed the employees so

to implement their feedback.

3. Reflecting on the experience, what do you think were the main mistakes, if any, that

Blake made in handling the engagement?

I believe that the major mistakes that Blake made was not requesting his continuation in

the project as his presence may not result in the software failure. Despite of the fact that

he was just an intern in the Royal Hotel, he still would have made others address that the

discontinuation could impact the project as it did by appearing different from the original

design. Blake also didn’t conducted an in-depth analysis of the software and directly

jumped to solve the problem.
