Case Study: Royal Hotel 1

Troubleshooting Information Systems at the Royal Hotel

1. Despite having relatively little specific information about why the system failed,

what do you think are the main reason for such failure?

Despite having some information that led to information system failure in the Royal

Hotel, there are other justifiable reasons for it. Firstly, Blake didn’t have sufficient time

to build an information system like these so there was a major chance that the system

might encounter some bugs or other issues. Along with this, the IT employees in the hotel

were not quite knowledgeable. I also believe that the newly appointed employee for the

project didn’t receive enough support from Blake and the management which could have

maybe avoided the failure.

2. How could you fix these problems?

Considering the major problems that lead to the emergence of issues in Royal Hotel, I

would first of all ensure that the management did their job or maintaining the system and

answering the end users of the system. Being in Blake’s place, I would have taken more

interviews of the end users so to find out the reason behind why they stopped using the

software and what caused this action. Lastly, I would have also ensured that sufficient

training be provided to the employees so that they can have a chance to familiarize

themselves with the new system.

3. Reflecting on the experience, what do you think were the main mistakes, if any, that

Blake made in handling the engagement?

I believe that the mistake Blake made was to not support the newly assigned project

handler Jack in the continuation. Along with this, he didn’t even request for his presence

in the project as discontinuation in Information Technology often leads to issues in the

final product. He must have addressed that even though he gave his vision to Jack. Along

with this, he didn’t fully grasp the scope of the project which can be clearly seen in the

fact that he didn’t even interview the users, which is quite unusual and unacceptable as

interviewing end users is a crucial step before setting up a software.
