The Tejeros Convention of 1897

The Tejeros Convention was mainly made in the purpose of reconciliation of two parties of
Katipunan: Magdiwang and Magdalo. These two factions separated each other because of conflicting
ideas or strategies on how they could battle the Spaniards.

The Tejeros Convention was related by Santiago Alvarez and Teodoro Agoncillo in their own books.

Santiago Alvarez

Santiago Alvarez was a Captain General and a member of Magdiwang along with Andres Bonifacio,
Emilio Jacinto, etc. He was called Kidlat ng Apoy or Kapitan Apoy because of his bravery when he
defeated the Spaniards. During the whole period, he used to write all of his experiences and all of the
events that he witnessed first hand and it was published into a book called Katipunan and the
Revolution: Memoirs of a General by Santiago V. Alvarez in 1992 by the Ateneo de Manila University. It
includes the original tagalog text from Alvarez and an English translation.

On March 25, 1897, the Tejeros Convention was held at San Francisco de Malabon. Both Magdiwang and
Magdalo parties were present at the assembly. It was lead by Jacinto Lumbreras, who was the secretary
at the time. Despite knowing about the alliance and betrayal that might happen later on, Villanueva still
continued to proceed with the meeting. Apart from discussing the defensive method that they might
use against the Spaniards, de las Alas started talking about the government that they wanted to have
and to achieve saying that all those initial problems might be resolved after they achieved the
