1. You’re a Netflix employee, and Reed Hastings has just stopped by your desk. “I’d like to
know,” he says, “what you like most and least about working here.” How do you think you
might respond?
Joyce Ann:
As a Netflix employee, I appreciate all the benefits they provide as well as the
difficulties they give to them, such as an unachievable deadline since it inspires us to work
harder. And I can manage all of the demands because it is my job, and I am responsible for
ensuring that our customers and company are satisfied. However, as an employee, I have no
least like for my job because I brought myself there to apply for it, so I am responsible for
my duty. There is no such thing as a perfect company as everything has imperfections, so
you have to accept it and perform your tasks professionally.
John Kevin:
The things that I like the most are my company gave me additional perks that I can
use now or soon and this company compensates me more than the average salary. Also, I
can receive bonuses like an increase in salary or some trips or leaves if I did my job
excellently. There is no such thing that I least like because all the things I do make me happy
especially when I know that our customer is satisfied. I took myself to this company to work
and earn some money, thus I should be accountable for my responsibilities.
Fatima Michaela:
I’d like to respond to Reed by thanking him for the opportunity and profound
education I receive as a Netflix employee. The crucial benefit that I like the most is they pay
me above market wages that might help me fulfill my needs. Particularly, when it comes to
compensation; such as I can take a vacation anytime I want when I felt burn-out. As an
employee, there’s no doubt that Netflix is one of the most innovative companies which
treated its employee like a professional adult who needs to do its job properly; and
shouldn’t stop learning to have more proficient knowledge in this field. As part of the
company, I don’t have any least contrivance in Netflix because this is the job that I chose
and would love to work with regardless of its work/life balance that I need to maintain
professionalism.
Haji:
I would say that I like that I am in a job that pays me higher than the average wage
and that I can gain extra benefits that I could use in the future or even today. Additionally, I
could take a vacation anytime I want as long as I make sure that I do my work properly and
in excellent quality. Although we do have that, I dislike that I am under a lot of pressure
considering that our work should always be great and no less.
Julliane Karl:
2. You’re a major Netflix stockholder attending the firm’s annual board meeting. When
you bump into Reed Hastings at a reception, he asks you, “How do you think we’re doing
with this company?” How would you respond?
Joyce Ann:
In our subscription-based movie rental service, we all give our best to deliver an
economical and convenient service to our consumers. We come up with insane ideas on
how we market our business uniqueness from our competitors. We keep on upgrading and
enhancing our system to make it easier for our current and future consumers to view the
latest movies in the comfort of their own homes without spending too much money or
having to go out.
John Kevin:
Fatima Michaela:
First of all, I need to answer him honestly and have enough knowledge regarding the
“firm’s annual board meeting”. I think we’re doing great because it provides the customer
our subscription-based movie rental service for people who like to stay at home and they
commonly preferred it as “Netflix and Chill’ which provides benefits to the company. It also
provides the Netflix subscriber to increase because of its reasonable price, that’s why it
catches the attention of the customers; was noticed for its innovative management
practices.
Haji:
You are doing excellent Mr. Hastings, providing films for people who have been
staying at home seems to be a great innovation. You have also grown a lot from mailing
disks to people in different neighborhoods into a huge company with lots of stocks. Best
believe, I always have my trust in you.
Julliane Karl:
Today our business is in apparent demand among people; it is timely due to the
pandemic nowadays. It is only necessary to enhance further and add various features to our
site because many competitors have already emerged. We need to continue improving our
attributes so that many consumers will purchase the service that we will provide to them.
Also, the company will need to make sure to give the best entertainment that our
customers deserve at a reasonable price that everybody can afford.
3. You’re the founder and owner of a small media company, and Netflix has indicated an
interest in buying your business. In addition to price, what other factors (if any) are
important to you?
Joyce Ann:
For me, if Netflix is interested in purchasing my little media company, apart from the
money. The other element that is crucial to me is that I should still be a part of it because I
am the one who knows more about my company than anyone. After all, I built it. And we
can combine our ideas to provide a one-of-a-kind, inventive, and great service because I
know Netflix saw the potential that I saw that no one else could.
John Kevin:
If Netflix is willing to buy my little media company, the factor that I’m still
considering is that I should have control over it. Since I worked hard on building this little
company, I know that I am the one who knows most of it greater than everybody else. And
if I will be given the chance to still have control of my little media company, I will still
upgrade and enhance some things for it to be better than before.
Fatima Michaela:
Haji:
Power; I still want control to cover the business that I’ve built after all. Although only
one could dream to have their positions kept once a bigger corporation decides to purchase
yours and dodging it or refusing it has arguably threatening consequences. However, if that
proved false, I would like to see the credibility and benefits of Netflix buying my company
and know if I could still do something about my company.
Julliane Karl:
4. You’ve been contacted by a marketing research company doing the work for Netflix.
The researcher asks if you use Netflix and, if not, why? If you do use Netflix, the
researcher asks what you like and dislike most about it. What would you say?
Joyce Ann:
Yes, I use Netflix to watch movies, particularly television series. The Netflix app is
one of my favorites since it allows anyone to use my account to watch movies on several
devices at the same time. I appreciate how several horror and thriller films they have
because I adore watching them. They even have a zombie movie series, which I also enjoy.
As a client, the only thing I don't enjoy about this app is that I've noticed they don't have all
of the new releases movies, and series that I want to watch on other platforms.
John Kevin:
If the researchers ask me if I used Netflix, most probably I'll answer yes because I use
it often. There are some points that I would like to emphasize, for example, there should be
a more structured compilation of dramas, if this is 18+ all shows that fit in there should be in
that compilation and needs access or verification in terms of age can watch them. This lets
its other viewers be protected from these certain topics that are not yet suitable for them.
The search engine in the app also must be categorized well. There are times when you
search for a specific show putting all its title, the app still provides a lot of suggestions and
tends to bring you your show at the bottom part. If for them it’s a way of promoting other
shows they offer, in the point of view of the customers, it's nothing more than a hassle. The
collection of anime section as well takes time when updating. But overall, Netflix is a very
reliable and consistent app to app. Affordable for its price for its performance.
Fatima Michaela:
Yes, I use Netflix. The things that I like while subscribing- using it, it has an HD on a
large number of titles and good catalogs; that might help me to enable understand more the
languages and its content. I can also download it if I would like to watch it offline and lastly,
there’s no disturbing advertisement that might annoy me. On the other side, the cons of
Netflix are some of the desired movies are missing or not available because the content
varies per region which is understandable enough for me.
Haji:
I like Netflix because it tracks the episodes that I’m watching or if I’ve stopped at a
certain timestamp, Netflix can bring me back to it if I decided that I’ll continue the movie an
hour later or even a day. I can also add my favorites so that I can rewatch them whenever I
have nothing to do. I just don’t like it that most of the shows are limited but meanwhile;
other countries have much more movies and series in them, using a VPN may be
recommendable but I don’t want to bother myself and purchasing anything more than I’m
used to.
Julliane Karl:
Yes, I am using Netflix to be entertained, especially in this time of the pandemic. One
of the things I liked about Netflix is helping people cope with the stress of their work,
studies, and even fighting the Covid-19 virus. In addition, I also commend Netflix because of
the advanced server that they are providing because whenever I am using it, there have no
lag issues I am encountering. However, the thing that I did not like about Netflix is that it is a
little bit costly compare to its competitors.
B. Social Entrepreneurship at Its Finest
1. What environmental events and forces have led to the existence of organizations such
as Mercy Corps?
2. In what ways does Mercy Corps interact with its environment in order to fulfill its
mission?
Mercy Corps is a global humanitarian organization that works on the front lines of
crises, catastrophe, poverty, and climate change to make the world a better place for
everyone. They interact with its environment by helping people from around the world, like
what happened in January 2010, in Haiti. They arrived there with a team of emergency
response experts from around the world by going to Haiti, they fulfill their mission as they
provide assistance in that place. They also give food to the hospitals, set up services to
provide clean water, initiate a work-for cash program for the survivors to aid in cleaning
debris and restoring buildings, they also set up trauma centers for children. It also believes
that each community must be the operator of their progress.
3. Discuss how the economic, global, and ethical environments interact with respect to an
organization like Mercy Corps.
Mercy Corporation interacts with respect through the economic, global, and ethical
environment. At first, is the Economic environment before they go to the place where they
will send help, they first make sure the status of the place like for example, the number
population must estimate it so that everyone can receive help from them. Next is the Global
environment they send help not only in a particular area but, they go across the world
reaching people fairly they bring needs or supplies as help. In helping them, you are also
contributing a lot to society. Lastly, is ethical environment the Mercy Corps takes the right
action by giving help not only to their area but globally they socialize with other countries by
respecting the culture, beliefs, and ethics of each country they go.
4. If you were asked to critique Mercy Corps in terms of effectiveness, what factors would
you focus on?
Mercy Corps is doing a great job in serving people. Its mission was to help people
who are struggling in their life and eliminate poverty. And I'll concentrate on emergency
responders who may use their skills to assist those in need while simultaneously overcoming
the current circumstance, which is the Covid. In delivering financial distributions to families
for immediate needs such as food, sanitation, and medical treatment. They also strive to
support local economies by assisting small-scale farmers and businesses as they navigate
this crisis. If I were to assess the effectiveness of Mercy Corp, I will focus on the mission they
carry out. I will look at the things that they did for people across the world, if how effective
the help they provide, and how did they execute it to be successful. Also, I will compare the
actual achievements against set goals, their team experience, and their strategy to do make
it happen.
C. The Embargo Grinds On
1. Describe the original decision made by the US government to impose a trade embargo
on Cuba
The United States restricted American corporations from doing business with Cuba in
1962, three years after Fidel Castro overcame the Bautista dictatorship. And it means that
no trade between the two countries was permissible. As a result, Americans are unable to
purchase Cuban products such as liquor, cigars, or coffee. As Americans prefer buying Cuban
coffee, other distributors of the product in the United States are at risk. And restrictions on
laptops, DVDs, and smartphones, which are currently unavailable in Cuba, have been lifted.
In addition, the U.S government fought against Castro's administration for taking American
land interests in Cuba.
2. In your opinion, is Thanksgiving Coffee’s Paul Katzeff doing the right thing in working
against the US embargo? Explain your opinion, if the answer is yes can you think of
additional steps Katzeff might take?
We agree with what Paulo Katzeeff is doing right. In the text, Paul said that the U.S.
Embargo is impractical because the embargo’s goals have not been achieved and immoral
since the people from Cuba are suffering from this law due to their government negligence
to provide sufficient fundings towards their farmers. It was also stated that the U.S. has the
largest market, and the fact that Cuba cannot trade their high-quality goods in this market
just leads to more hardships for the people making these products. All he is doing is
opposing the embargo, and his purpose is to raise public awareness of the embargo's
unfairness. Through Thanksgiving Coffee, Paul can educate its consumers about the
embargo on Cuba. I think that Paul can branch out, by doing so, his advocacy can be heard
from different places, and through this branch out he can also gain profit to donate to the
nonprofit organization he is working with.
3. Speculate behavioral forces that might affect Katzeff’s decisions.
Melanie Robbins once tweeted “Unsuccessful people make decisions based on their
current situations. Successful people make decisions based on where they want to be” and I
think Katzeff is one of these successful people who see what’s up ahead for their company.
As he doesn’t want to risk the company he worked for 30 years, he holds great importance
to his company, and I think one of the reasons that could change his mind in the situation
might be the bounded rationality and the unfairness of the embargo. As bounded rationality
means that the decision-maker is limited by his values, unconscious reflexes, and habits,
while the highlight of the injustice of his competitor may be costing his organization time
and money, his heart may be with the Cuban people. After all, he is up against the US
embargo in regards to trading with Cuba.
4. How might US businesses best prepare themselves for the possible elimination of the
embargo? What kind of decisions do they need to be making?
Cynthia Carroll utilized delayering as a defense mechanism. Anglo American PLC was
affected by the global recession and had taken cost-cutting. In this case, Xstrata offered
merging with their company Anglo American PLC, but CEO Cynthia Caroll declined and called
it “totally unacceptable.” She went on to say that she was optimistic that her organization
would be able to emerge from these difficulties with their strategy and tremendous assets in
place to achieve their clear goals. Also, the organization’s new structure is because of
delayering and globalization with given disruption period of employees as their new roles and
responsibilities may affect the efficiency of the company operation.
SWOT ANALYSIS
a. The company will be able to focus on the programs that are gaining profit
and should be able to expand it. By using this strategy, the company overall,
should be able to see the trend and pinpoint which products are being sold
and which are not, thus the company will be able to give attention to these
products rather than mass producing and losing profits when the products
are not being sold.
b. Through the process of elimination of such programs, the company can try to
formulate new programs that can benefit the company. In addition, finding
out new strategies to advertise the new and old products so that the
company would be able to sell will definitely improve the company’s financial
problem.
Cons:
a. People will be losing jobs due to the reduction of such programs. A solution
would be relocating these employees to other programs within the company,
therefore whenever there is an expansion of a program that is benefiting,
there would not be any shortage of human resources.
b. The duration for using this type of strategy will take a while, despite it being a
good strategy, there is no guarantee that it will be effective during that
period because there are constant changes in the market. In addition, the
employees will also have to get used to the working environment when
changes have been applied.
• Make use of the full capabilities and skills of the current employees.
Hiring more employees to have a more productive operation is not the right
option to do so because it takes time and money. In this action, the business needs
to give rights to employees to do tasks other than their current role which can make
an effective and efficient operation. Also, discovering other skills of employees
where they excel and reorganizing them can smoothen the operation of the
company during the recession.
Pros:
a. Being able to capitalize the full potential of the employees would help the
company improve the production of products that they are selling.
Through this, there would not be any need of hiring more workers and
spending more funds for salaries. And it should be a given that through
the implementation of this, workers should be given a raise in their
salaries.
b. The employees, being able to work outside of their working space, where
they can aid their coworkers to finish the task faster would definitely
lessen the burden the requirements that others need to do by
themselves.
Cons:
a. The employees would be over working despite being done, it would still
be their choice on whether they would be able to help their coworkers
since they are tired from their own job.
b. People who applied for the job should be only working to improve
themselves, and should not mind other people’s work, despite the
strategy saying that it would be efficient, by focusing on one's role in the
company would help the production most as it is part of their expertise. It
would also take time for others to adjust to this strategy meaning there
would be working overtime.
RECOMMENDATION
For Cynthia Carroll at Anglo American PLC SWOT Analysis, alternative courses of
action and possible solutions to the problem. The advantages and disadvantages per
potential course of action above. The following are the recommendations:
• Cynthia Carroll must concentrate on leveraging its strengths as one of the most
efficient mining firms in the world to make the most of its opportunities.
• Anglo American should use greater penetration, which will allow the organization to
attain a large number of consumers and penetrate farther into desired consumer
groups. Must establishing a consumer partnership by co-branding with relevant but
diverse brands and firms to increase brand visibility among target consumers.
• Adapt the cultural diversity components of various markets by understanding their
group characteristics, allowing the organization to present itself better and connect
more successfully with various targeted groups in different marketplaces.
• Cynthia Carroll should accept the reality that in order to increase revenue and grow
the company's consumer base, she must engage with other firms.

B. CASE STUDY: When Stress Becomes Too Tough To Handle
“When stress becomes too rigid to handle” was used to highlight the behavior of Jason
Rodriguez as a former employee of an engineering firm. As Sandra Naiman, a Denver-based
career consultant, puts it, “off-and on-the-job stresses feed into one another” to elevate
stress levels during the recession. One of the security specialists is Kenneth Springer, who
keeps an eye on potentially dangerous situations and agrees that “Tough times will cause
people to do crazy things.” On the other hand, Laurance Miller says economic stress will not
make someone into a killer. However, he believed that “it is usually someone who had a
long streak of problems.” which fits the profile of Jason Rodriguez, who had been struggling
for years with marital and mental problems, unemployment, debt, and simmering rage.
Specifically, the study aims to determine:
1. What strategies should the engineering firm do to help their employees handle work
stress?
2. What are the things that the company should do to avoid this situation in the future?
3. Which/What programs should the firm implement to enhance the behavior of its
employees?
Advantages:
b. Having a wellness plan for the employees to be healthy is one way of telling and
showing that the company cares for its employees. Hence, a lesser possibility
that an employee will attempt to harm others inside the company because aside
from the healthy well-being that each of them has, they know that they are
working under a company that empathizes with its employees.
Disadvantages:
a. Although essential and will lessen the possibility of a harmful and violent
employee, it does not guarantee a harmless working environment. This is
especially when the company has been long existing for years.
Advantages:
b. This will not only help the employees but also the company. In a way, as the
employees get to trust and connect with the work environment they are in,
the lesser harm that one would think of committing.
Disadvantages:
a. As the employees interact and connect, the lesser work it will be done. Thus,
it will also need a follow-up action, such as adding an hour more for the
employees’ work time. However, not every employee is willing to do such
compensation in exchange for social interaction with other employees.
b. Another problem may also arise with this because as the employees interact
with each other, they will also have more time to talk about different things.
Hence, the possibility of miscommunication may also arise. Through this, the
possibility of a different type of workspace violence may occur.
RECOMMENDATION
Stress can reach a firm or organization because of several reasons such as deadlines,
tight budgets, problems with subordinates, and increased business competitions in which
they experience anxiety and frustration and some people respond with aggression and
violence. As well as Jason Rodriguez who had been struggling for years with marital and
mental problems, unemployment, debt, and simmering rage, the organization or the firm
should implement a wellness program to improve the behavior and health of the
employees. Employees are vital assets of the firm and guaranteeing their exceptional
psychological and physical well-being places them up to do well. Through this program, the
firm can avoid or control the undesirable negative ideas that happen in the organization.
Another alternative course is to create opportunities for social interactions nourishing
support groups, work relations are extremely significant to employee’s well-being. As
individuals, we need interaction with other people to be able to handle stress.

RECOMMENDATION
What?
So What?
I've discovered that leading and managing are two different things. Leading
is about how you influence your employees by empowering and motivating them to carry
out the organization's direction and vision. However, managing is more about controlling
and problem-solving through planning, budgeting, and resource allocation. And, as a future
entrepreneur, instead of managing my employees, I will begin to lead them so that we may
work toward the company's vision and goal since this offers direction and assists everyone
in identifying jobs that best match their abilities and experiences. After all, leadership is the
most vital component in achieving an organization's success because it is the art or practice
of persuading others to perform given tasks freely, efficiently, and correctly. Managers must
also be leaders because the organization cannot function effectively without them, so let us
stop managing and start leading.
B. It’s Not Manipulation, It’s Strategic Communication by Keisha Brewer
What?
During the presentation of Keisha Brewer about "It’s not manipulation, its strategic
communication," I take down notes on the significant points that the speaker made.
Identifying the plan, understanding your audience, communicating the value, and expressing
the need are some of the main parts she highlighted in her speech about what we need to
do to achieve what we want out of the deal. I became able to understand the difference
between manipulation and strategic communication as I listened to the speaker. That
strategic communication aims to benefit people involved, and it all comes down to intent
when you think about it. On the other hand, manipulators believe they have the right to
control and think they know more than others. After all, I admire how she presents her
topic, making it engaging and understandable by using relevant examples and concluding
with takeaways for her audience.
So What?
For me, knowing how to utilize strategic communication in our profession or even in
our personal lives is crucial since we can implement it in a variety of circumstances that may
occur in our lives. And the four main points highlighted in the speech matters, such as
Identifying the Goal, Understanding Your Audience, Communicating the Value, and
Expressing the Need, are vital in understanding how strategic communication works. For
example, I need an investor as a businesswoman, and I need to know the best method to
get investment from my potential target. First and foremost, I must identify my goal, which
is to earn their trust and investment. Second, I must understand my audience by doing
research on my investor to determine the type of organization with which they wish to be
affiliated. Third, I will communicate the value, in which I will assist them in understanding
what potential of my company and the advantages of investing in my company. Finally, I
must express the need, which I was able to do while discussing the value that we both share
to articulate the demand that we both seek. After all, the primary purpose is to show how
everyone can use good communication to succeed in everyday life, which is critical for all of
us, particularly company owners.
What Now?
