Student Teaching Final Narrative

Student Teacher: Lauren Schoen Semester/Year: Fall 2021

School District: Grand Rapids Public Schools
School Building: CA Frost Environmental Science Academy Middle/High School; Grand Rapids, MI

Please provide a brief placement overview and summary description of the student teacher’s performance related to the Four Domains of
Professional Practice: Planning and Preparation, Classroom Environment, Instruction, and Professional Responsibilities. Thank you.

It has been my pleasure to have worked with Lauren Schoen as she completed her student teaching at CA Frost Environmental Science Academy
for middle and high school students. Lauren worked with 11 th and 12th graders in the content area of math. As her University Field Coordinator, I
observed Lauren 5 times and can give credence to her accomplishments as a student teacher.

Lauren wrote appropriate and complete lesson plans in her various math domains. The lesson plans included standards; objectives; possible
misconceptions students may have; materials needed for the lesson; differentiation if needed; and technology use for every lesson. Materials were
prepared ahead of time, and she was organized in her presentation and planning.

The classroom environment was welcoming and inviting to students. Physical space was organized well and conducive to learning. Tables and
desks were arranged to encourage collaboration among students. Lauren implemented classroom rules, routines, and procedures. These rules and
procedures were also visually represented in the classroom. Lauren greeted students as they walked into the classroom and established respectful
relationships with the students, as well as encouraged students to create respectful relationships with one another. Lauren used eye contact, body
language, and facial expressions appropriately which conveyed her care for students, as well as her confidence in her content area and passion for
being a teacher. Students could sense Lauren wanted to be their teacher and respect was quickly given, as well as a safe environment was
experienced by learners.

For every lesson presented, Lauren stated the day’s learning objectives and standards were written on the whiteboard. Students were able to
understand the reason for the objectives and how they related to past learning. As Lauren’s lesson plans were clearly organized, she was also
organized in her presentation of the lesson. Lauren used a variety of questioning techniques with students so that students could explain how they
attained their answers and could verbally explain their thinking to her and their peers. Students were given opportunities to work independently, with
a table partner, and in whole group. Assignments could also be completed independently, with a table partner, or at times in a whole group setting.
Assignments aligned with the objectives. Lauren reflected on her lessons and showed flexibility when review or more time was needed for students
to understand the concepts. Throughout the lesson and at the end of every lesson Lauren gave quick assessments so that she could ascertain
students’ comprehension of the concepts. This allowed students to be engaged in their learning, assess their learning, and provided opportunity for
students to ask questions and review concepts/problem solving steps involved in that specific lesson. Lauren uses technology very well. This kept
students engaged in their learning and encouraged student involvement. Lauren is well-versed in her content area and will be a strong math teacher
to middle and high school students.

Lauren displayed professionalism with her cooperating teacher, students, and with school staff personnel. Lauren was respectful to all, and
evidenced desire to continue learning. She took “critiquing” well and incorporated new learning in her future lessons. Lauren cared about CA Frost
and involved herself into various after-school activities. She was part of the CA Frost family.

Lauren has demonstrated the necessary qualities of being an effective teacher. She has exceeded the expectations and has completed all the
requirements to become a certified educator. She will be a great asset to any school. I highly recommend Lauren Schoen for any educational
endeavor she pursues without reservations and would be honored to share as professional reference on her behalf.
