Social Systems Model

The major sociological perspective on

education fall nicely into the functional, conflict,
and symbolic interactionist approaches
(Ballantine & Hammack, 2012).
Functionalism
Education serves many social purposes. These
are socialization, integration, placement, and
social and cultural innovation. Latent roles
include child care, peer relationships, and
keeping high school students out of the workforce.
Educational issues affect society because these
functions cannot be fully performed.
Conflict Theory

The impact of education's "hidden curriculum"

and tracking and standardized testing
increases social inequality. Schools' funding and
learning circumstances vary greatly, leading to
educational gaps that promote socioeconomic
inequalities.
Symbolic Interactionism
This viewpoint focuses on classroom,
playground, and other school social
interactions. Specifically, school-based social
interaction influences gender roles
development, as does teachers' expectations of
students' intellectual ability. Some educational
issues depend on social interaction and
expectations.
