The case One firm firm captures the efforts put in by John Mack and his team to bring a change in
the company. His goal was to make a more collaborative environment where the focus would be on
the overall growth of the company.

The following were some of the takeaways from the case and its discussion inside the class:

1. The HR policies are very well framed and formally documented within a company. However,
the actual culture and practices are formed from the behaviours of the employees working
in the company. HRM can be used to bridge the gap between these formal and informal
systems.
In the case, John Mack understood this and took further streps in this direction. He went out
for dinners with the company employees working at every level. By this he made them
realise that he is approachable, someone who people can follow and someone who knows
them.

2. Inter departmental functioning and cross selling cannot be forced. The employees have
sense of ego in their work and specially experts may not follow a particular order. In addition
to this, if the cross selling is performed without inner motivation, the customer may come to
know about it and the cross selling can backfire.
John Mack acknowledged this, therefore, he organised quarterly conferences for the
employees. This was a great catalyst for them to bond among themselves. This could have
resulted into employees referring to candidates to one another.

3. The purpose of every firm is to increase the amount of money they earn. A common strategy
to increase business is globalisation. However, globalisation introduces a great number of
complexities along with it. They could be related to legalities, manufacturing, raw material
sourcing, taxes, etc. associated with different places of occurrence.
