18. Work in pairs. Discuss the films you have recently seen.

One of the
students is supposed to speak about a film he liked, the other about a different
film which he disliked. Try and interrupt each other with questions to get
some more information about the film you have not seen.
Model:
A: I've seen a feature film that was a hit with the public. I, myself, can praise it
unreservedly. For one thing the camera-work was wonderful ... .
В: I was less fortunate. The comedy I saw was a complete flop. The leading actor
was miscast. As for the camera-work ... .
I saw the noir drama My Name, which tells the story of Yoon Ji-woo (Han So-
hee), a woman who joins the organized crime circle and, under their leadership,
infiltrates the police as an undercover agent to uncover the truth about her father's
death. It fills her with anger and pain. She wants to avenge her father, whatever the
consequences. But to take revenge is to become a monster. A man who got rid of
all fears of the law, death and morality.

She wanted to live a normal life. But the price of revenge is turning into a monster
who loses all ability to feel and lives only for one purpose - murder.

19. Work in pairs. Read the statements and agree or disagree with them.
Agreement or disagreement should be followed by some appropriate comment
where possible:
1) Cinema is an art of illusion.
Films are extremely popular with our generation. More, than a theatre or books.
Why is it so? The plausible answer to that question can be: " Simply because it's
entertaining." However, cinema is more than just entertainment. It's something that
has a great influence on person's conduct. The spectators always take to some
protagonists and try to emulate them. People are prone to treating the cinema as
another reality which is more exciting and compelling than the reality they live in.
So they start living that ilusory life which is in fact a dangerous one
2) It is necessary for a film to leave certain shadows, unresolved fantasies.
3) Cinema can help a lot in the field of education.
I think this is the function of a genre film. So, depending on the genre, if the genre
film is adventure, biographical or truthful, the answer may be yes. And for fantasy,
drama, comedy, I think it depends on yourself.
4) Violence should not be shown on the screen.
Мany say that film genres help people find themselves. So I think Violence should
be shown on the screen.in the film and show how to deal with violence.
5) The success of a film mainly depends on the film director.
The atmosphere of the film and the overall impression of watching it depends on
the director. In case of failure or success of the film, the viewer first of all scolds or
praises the director, because the director is the face of the film project.
6) Cinema is not an earnest art. It is just entertainment.

Cinema is an art form. Because art involves emotions, and that's what happens
while watching a movie, you might even cry because it's all done so perfectly and
really. This is the work of geniuses and creative people. It takes time and passion,
just like a book or a painting.
7) Literary works should not be adapted for the screen as people simply stop
reading fiction: seeing a film is "easier" than reading a book.
It's easier for a person to watch a movie, because it's easier for the brain to accept
and process this information. He is lazy, and always chooses the path of less
resistance, in which he will spend less energy. When reading, you need to
reproduce the picture of what is happening yourself, sometimes when some part is
not clear, you should reread it several times, it is expensive to concentrate. When
reading the book, the author touches on many little things in what is happening: a
description of nature, the appearance of a character, etc., in turn, when watching a
movie, we see just a familiar actor in the image or a picture of nature, therefore, the
brain simply ignores a large amount of incoming information, screening it out. As
a result, less energy spent.
20. Give your own views on the problems below.
Topic 1. The role of cinema in our life
Talking points:
1)Different genres of films, their impact on the spectators.
No other art form has had such an impact on our lives as cinema. Everyone loves
stories. We want to watch different films depending on our mood, temperament
and situation. The main thing is to choose the right genre. The term "genre" is
often used in the film industry to categorize a movie tire. Many films are difficult
to classify. For this reason, many films have multiple genres. They are categorized
by description, theme, variety, or plot idea, which is determined by how the film is
written. There are a lot of genres. For example: Comedy, Drama, Horror, Western
Est.
Comedy is meant to make us laugh by exaggerating situations, language, action,
relationships and characters. The mystery can make us think and try to solve the
crime. Watching a movie, you can cry, and laugh, and be afraid. Filmmakers
know this, and depending on what they want to achieve, they choose the genre they
shoot. War films are starting to be shown on TV, on the eve of the anniversary of
the Great Patriotic War. There are a lot of disaster movies on TV because of the
doomsday rumors. Everything is random. Television is a big industry.
Sometimes it's good, sometimes it's not, but you have a choice whether you want
to fall for this trick or not. If you want adventure, then you should choose
adventure films or westerns. These are usually exciting stories with new
experiences or exotic locations, very similar to or often combined with the action
genre. Westerns are the main defining genre of the American film industry.
2) Development of people's cultural level, taste.
Every person has desires, paradigms, goals, aspirations, dreams. They have a great
influence on each person, which, in turn, directly shapes a person's life, forcing a
person to act in one way or another. Obviously, people with different paradigms
will act differently. The level of human development explains many of his actions
and greatly shapes his life. It is the value of a person's inner culture that determines
the form of a person's life. If a person adheres to low goals that are inherent in a
low culture– then his life will be low. Such a life, although it is simple and full of
pleasures, leads a person straight into hellish living conditions. Hellish living
conditions are not a mythical hell somewhere far away, which comes after death.
This is hell on earth, right in life. How this hell is embodied, exactly as well as
how paradise is embodied, will be written in the description of low and high
human culture.
The level of development of a person's culture is formed based on the knowledge
that a person acquires and implements, as well as the choices, actions and
mannerisms of a person. Internal culture is formed gradually, and this is one of the
reasons why a person cannot know himself from the inside instantly. Because
before he knows himself, he needs to become, acquire his culture, personality.
3) Films for entertainment and education.
Entertainment plays a vital role in today's society. With the development of the
society, pressure of people's life is increase, at this time, entertainment for people's
life have played an important role in ease the pressure, people has more and more
demand for entertainment, their need entertainment to relax. In addition to this,
entertainment is very important for society, people through the way of
entertainment to meet new friend, entertainment is a good way to increase the
feelings between friends. However, in the aspect of learning, entertainment
whether it makes sense, this is a very controversial issue. Some people think
entertainment should have an educational value, and other people think
entertainment should not have an educational value.
