PU Composite Utility Pole

Boldur : Towards a more resilient
TM

future

Made with BASF’s Elastolit® polyurethane and enabled by

our unique filament winding technology, Boldur™ poles are
more than twice as sturdy and resilient as compared to
conventional concrete utility poles. This enables them to
stand firm in strong winds, heavy snows and other natural
disasters.

natural events
1
When one concrete pole falls

When a concrete pole falls, its falling weight can increase the loads on the neighbouring poles,
pulling the wires on the poles causing them to break and starting a chain reaction called a
‘cascade’. Cascades can continue for kilometers, bringing down numerous poles and impacting a
wide community.

Boldur™: Light yet strong

Boldur™ poles typically have weights that are one-forth
the weights of concrete poles with comparable
strengths.

Many Boldur™ poles have weights that are even smaller

fractions of the weights of concrete poles.

How would using a Boldur™ composite pole mitigate

cascades?

A Boldur™ pole with a breaking strength of 2300kg has

a weight 220kg. The weight being a small fraction of the
pole’s breaking strength helps to reduce the likelihood of
cascades or stops cascades in their tracks.

Intertek Report
ASTM D635-14/ISO 3795Flammability test report shows that the PU composite utility pole
material does not support burning after removing flame and heat source. Test reports available on
request.

ignition sources, the PU composite utility pole will not continue burning, but quickly self
extinguishes. Test report available on request.

Logistics and Installation Cost

Boldur™ Poles have lower logistics, storage and installation costs

BoldurTM poles
• Only 4 crew members required for a typical pole as
they are lightweight typically 250kg or less.
• Poles can be installed quickly in difficult terrain,
cutting through mountainous areas.

Concrete
• A typical 12m concrete pole weighs more than
850kg making it difficult to transport to the job site
and install without machinery such as cranes, boom
trucks or bucket trucks.
• Heavy equipment such as cranes and lift trucks are
required for loading and unloading of poles from
trucks.
• Proximity to roads is required for installation.

Maintenance cost

Boldur™ poles are impervious to pests and not subjected to rust or corrosion. These features
keep maintenance costs low and extend the life of the grid.
