1. What is an electromagnetic wave? Describe with your words.

Electromagnetic waves are generated by electrical charges that oscillate

through a conductor, such as an antenna, and which is made up of electric
and magnetic fields, which oscillate in mutually perpendicular planes, and in
turn these planes are perpendicular to the direction of propagation. So we
can establish that electromagnetic waves are transverse propagation.

2. What are the parameters in an electromagnetic wave? Describe them

with your words.

Electromagnetic waves have a series of parameters that define their

characteristics, and that will indicate notable differences when they are
propagating through the medium. These parameters vary and acquire
different values; depending on the medium in which they propagate. They
are dependent on each other, establishing relationships that will help us to
identify them. The parameters are the following:

period, frequency, amplitude, wavelength and speed

3. What is electrical permittivity 𝜺 and magnetic permeability 𝝁 of a

medium?

Permittivity is a physical constant that describes how an electric field affects

and is affected by a medium.

The magnetic permeability of a medium can be defined as the measure of

its ability to establish lines of magnetic flux, that is, the greater the
permeability of the medium, the greater the number of lines of flux per unit
area.

4. From the following wave equation:

1. 𝑬𝒚(𝒙,𝒕)=𝑨𝒔𝒆𝒏(𝒘𝒕−𝒌𝒙)𝒋̂=𝑨𝒔𝒆𝒏(𝟐𝝅𝒇𝒕− ❑ 𝒙)𝒋̂=𝑪𝟏 𝒔𝒆𝒏(𝑪𝟐𝒕−𝑪𝟑𝒙)𝒋̂

𝑨 = 𝑪𝟏

𝒘 = 𝟐𝝅𝒇 = 𝑪𝟐

𝒌 = ❑ = 𝑪𝟑

Complete: 1116546386 then, 𝐶1 = 3 𝐶2 = 8 𝐶3 = 6

Parameter and unit Solution Description

a. Amplitude 𝑨 [V/m] A= 𝐶1 = 3 v/m It is the highest value of the

wave oscillations
b. Frequency 𝒇 = 𝒘/𝟐𝜋 f = w = 8 rad /s is the measure of the
[Hz] 2π 2 π r ad number of cycles or
repetitions of the wave per
𝑓 = 1.273 𝐻𝑧 unit of time.

c. Wavelength 2π 2π is the physical distance

𝝀= [m ] =
𝝀=𝟐𝜋/𝑘[m] k 6 between two points from
which the wave repeats
𝝀 =1.047m itself.
d. Propagation speed 𝑽𝒑 = 𝒇 𝝀 [m/s]= is the magnitude that
𝑽𝒑 = 𝒇 𝝀 [m/s] measures the speed at
𝑽𝒑 = 1.273 Hz * 1.047m which the disturbance of the
wave propagates along its
𝑽𝒑 = 1.332 m/s displacement.
e. Wave number 𝒌 k= 𝐶3 = 6 rad/s Divide the frequency by the
[rad/m] speed to get the wave
number.
f. Angular frequency 𝒘 w= 𝐶2 = 8 rad/s It refers to the angular
[rad/s] displacement per unit of time
g. Direction of travel (𝒙, Eje x It is the one in which the
𝒚 or 𝒛) wave is transmitted.
h. Polarization direction direction j refers to the direction of the
(𝒊̂, ̂𝒋 or 𝒌) electric field.
CONCLUSIONS

 Electromagnetic waves can be perceived according to their frequency.

 Electromagnetic waves propagate through an oscillation of electric and

magnetic fields.

 Electromagnetic waves are also the support for telecommunications and

the complex functioning of today's world.
