9.3 Calculating Probabilities for the Normal Model

For a distribution 𝑋~𝑁(𝜇, 𝜎 ), we can find the probability of X taking a range of values through the
following:

1. First calculate the z-score

2. Then use the table of probabilities to find Φ(X)
3. Determine the probability required, referring to a sketch

Example 1: 𝑋~𝑁(2,5 )

a. 𝑃(𝑋 < 7) b. 𝑃(𝑋 > 11)

b. 𝑃(|𝑋| < 3) d. 𝑃(|𝑋 − 2| < 6)

Example 2: X is normally distributed such that 𝑋~𝑁(𝜇, 36). Also, it is known that 𝑃(𝑋 > 159.3) = 0.05.
Calculate the value of 𝜇 correct to 1 decimal place.
Example 3: 𝑋~𝑁(37.1, 𝜎 ), 𝑃(𝑋 > 53.1) = 0.04. Calculate the value of σ.

Example 4: 𝑋~𝑁(𝜇, 𝜎 ), 𝑃(𝑋 < 37) = 0.1, 𝑃(𝑋 > 49.3 = 0.2. Calculate the values of µ and σ.
