Family Event
Due Module 8
Design a family event the meets the following criteria:

 Encourages family participation and interaction (10 points)

o How will you get them to take time out of their busy schedules to come to your program?
I know not all families are going to be able to attend my event, however, I want to include as many
families as I can. I will send out an informational sheet that has a couple of dates and times out to my
families and allow them to choose which day and time works best for them. I will also inform on that
informational sheet, that majority votes will win and we will go by that day and time. I think
providing this opportunity for families to choose is essential because they are the ones that are going
to be taking time out of their busy schedules to come to this planned event.
o How can you make them feel that their input, ideas, and participation is valued?
By allowing the families to choose between a couple of days and times to see what works best for
their schedules, this is giving them an opportunity to plan around their busy lives too. I want to be able
to have an environment where families are feeling valued and their participation matters.

 Gives parents opportunities to connect with you and with each other (10 points)
o How will you encourage families to get to know one another and get to know/trust you?
I will set out different activity opportunities for families and children to participate in. The purpose of
this is encourage conversation between the children and families. I will take the time to approach each
family that does attend and connect with them briefly to acknowledge their presence. I will also
remind parents in the beginning of the event the purpose of this Family Fun Night. I will encourage
parents/caregivers to have conversations with other children and families because the purpose of this
event is to get to know each other.
I will also inform them that as a teacher, I like to promote parents and caregivers’ input because their
input is valued. I will also inform them that we will have more Family Fun Nights to promote “getting
to know” each other.

 Gives parents insights into the educational purposes of one or more classroom activities (10 points)
o How will you show them what their child is doing and learning in at least one area of the
classroom?
I like to document what children have been doing and learning in our classroom. One way to make
this happen is by collecting photographs of classroom and activities throughout the year. I will have
those books available for families to look at during this event. I will also encourage families to take a
peek in each child’s portfolio where those creations are held throughout the year.
Throughout my classroom, I will having the children’s work on display and discuss some of the
activities that we have done together as a group.

 Provides suggestions to extend learning into the home (10 points)

o What activities can families do at home to support their child’s development that ties in with the
event’s activities?
I will remind parents that when children are involved in activities and art, that it is not about the
product, it all about the process. I would recommend to families that they need to create activity
opportunities that are based on their child’s interests and capability.

I wanted to create a Family Fun Night as an option for families to make connections with other families, including myself. I
think providing a range of activities for children and families to be involved in will make those connections. I want to create
an environment where families feel welcomed and appreciated of their time. This is an event where I want families to
remember and create memories with their children. Even though children and teachers spend majority of their time in the
classroom, it is also important for families to know what their child does during the day and see how they are learning.
