STATICS OF RIGID BODIES

QUIZ 3

1. A force acts at the origin in a direction defined by angles θx = ?, θy = 70o, θz = 50o.

The x component of force is -100 kN. Determine the other components, magnitude of
force, value of θx. (30 pts)

2. A rope is wrapped three turns around a pipe as shown. Determine the force required
to just support a weight of 2000 N. Coefficient of friction between the rope and the
cylinder is 0.25. (20 pts)

3. A block weighting 3000 N is resting on a wedge and its side wall is leaving against a
vertical wall. The block is to be raised by applying a horizontal force to the 10 o wedge. μ
= 0.3 for all contact surfaces. Determine the minimum force P to raise the block.
(20
pts)
4. A 8 m long ladder rests against a vertical wall making an angle of 50 o with the wall
and resting on a floor. If a boy, whose weight is one half that of the ladder climbs it, at
what distance along the ladder will he be, when the ladder is about to slip? The
coefficients of friction between the ladder and the wall is 1/3 and that between the
ladder and the floor is 1/2. (30 pts)
