CLASSWORK NO. 1A:

Introduction to Steel Design

Description:

This classwork is a library work activity. Students are required to visit the
school library and do research on the given guided questions on the review
on the basic properties of structural steel, structural steel design codes and
specifications and structural steel design methods.

Time Frame:
One (1) Laboratory meeting.

Individual Submittals:
1. Hand written report/ answers to guided questions
2. List of reference books on steel design found in our library
3. Proof of Library Visit

Suggested Libraries to Visit:

1. Mapua Digital E-Textbooks
2. METIS – Mapua E-Text Infinity Solutions
Guided Questions on Introduction to Steel Design:

1. Give at least 10 Advantages and 10 Disadvantages of steel as a

structural material. Explain each.

2. Aside from our lecture, enumerate at least 10 different types and

properties of structural steel. Discuss each.

3. Define and differentiate “building codes” versus “design specifications”.

Discuss and give examples.

4. Identify and differentiate ASD from LRFD. Give at least 5 similarities

and 5 differences. Give its design concepts and philosophies.

5. Give all safety factors and load combinations for ASD.

6. Give all load factors, resistance factors, and load combinations for

LRFD.

7. Identify the following Acronyms: AISC, UBC, ASCE, ASEP, NSCP,

ASTM, AASHTO, AISI, HSS, WT, MC, HSLA, SMAW, AREMA, BOCA.

8. Look for at least 15 reference books on steel design found in our Mapua

Digital E-Textbooks and METIS. Copy their complete title, author, edition

and copyright year.
